GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Nate Simon (Gwynedd Valley, Pa./Abington Friends School) smacked a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning of the nightcap as the Gettysburg College baseball team swept Washington College in a Centennial Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Kirchhoff Field.
The Bullets (18-10, 5-4 CC) won the opener 7-2 before capturing a 4-3 decision in the second game.
Gettysburg received outstanding pitching, as starters
Ryan Taylor (Eldersburg, Md./Loyola Blakefield) and
Drew Felsenthal (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley) combined to allow just one earned run over 18 innings. Taylor, Felsenthal, and sophomore reliever
Brett Harrington (North Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) went the entire twinbill without issuing a walk.
Junior
Tommy LeNoir (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) finished 5-for-10 at the plate while Simon finished 3-for-8 with three runs and three RBIs.
Gettysburg never trailed in either game.
Washington, which entered the day ranked seventh in Division III with 81 stolen bases, went 0-for-2 on the basepaths, with junior
Cam MacDonald (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) throwing out a pair of runners.
Junior centerfielder
Patrick O'Grady (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) added a highlight-reel catch in each game, including a diving stab in right-center with runners on the corners to end the first inning of the nightcap.
While the Bullets held at least a three-run lead for most of the opener, the second game was a true nailbiter as Washington (12-17, 3-6 CC) rallied in the final innings. However, Felsenthal dramatically held off the Shoremen in each of his last three frames.
Gettysburg led 3-0 early on, as Simon tripled and scored in the second before the Bullets scored twice in the fifth.
In the top of the seventh, Washington scored a pair of unearned runs to break up Felsenthal's shutout bid, making it 3-2 before putting a runner on third with one out. But Felsenthal struck out the No. 8 hitter before inducing a groundout to himself to escape the inning. Then in the eighth, the Shoremen tied it before loading the bases with one out. But with his pitch count escalating, Felsenthal again stood tall, this time fanning both the Nos. 6-7 batters swinging.
In the ninth, Washington put a runner on first with one out following an error, but Felsenthal induced a 4-6-3 inning-ending double play on his final pitch – his 136th of the game. His final offering also gave him a rare 100th strike thrown.
Gettysburg threatened in the bottom of the ninth but reliever Dan Jarrell got out of a bases-loaded jam with a fly-out down the rightfield line.
In the 10th, Harrington (1-0) was summoned out of the pen for his first appearance of the season. After yielding a leadoff walk he set down Washington's Nos. 3-5 hitters, including a pair of strikeouts.
Jarrell (3-2) was unable to get an out in the bottom of the inning, as junior
Al Posch (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) and LeNoir pounded singles through the left side before senior
Pat Cody (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) had his sacrifice bunt attempt roll just inside the third base line and stay fair, reaching for a hit and extending his hitting streak to 16. Simon then smashed the first pitch he saw back through the box and into centerfield to plate Posch for his second collegiate walk-off hit; he also ended the game with a single in Gettysburg's 5-4 win over Centenary College on the Bullets spring break trip to Florida in 2011.
Felsenthal scattered eight hits and tied a career-high with eight strikeouts. Only one of his runs were earned. MacDonald went 2-for-3 for the Bullets while LeNoir and Simon each finished 2-for-5.
Starter Joe Kearney-Argow also came away with a no-decision for Washington, allowing just three runs (two earned) on five hits and one walk over seven innings.
Simon and Posch extended their hitting streaks to 15 and 13, respectively, in the nightcap.
In the opener, Gettysburg jumped to a 5-0 lead three innings into the contest. Simon drew a leadoff walk in the second and went on to score on a fielder's choice to make it 1-0.
Gettysburg then broke it open with a four-run third in which the Bullets unloaded on starter Kyle Aldrich (3-3) with four straight hits to open the frame. Following back-to-back singles from Posch and LeNoir, Cody doubled in Posch. Simon followed up with a two-run double and Cody went on to score on fielder's choice to give the Bullets their early five-run cushion.
Washington's bullpen settled in, however, and allowed only a pair of unearned over five innings of work. After Aldrich departed following three innings, Gettysburg managed only two unearned runs in the sixth on a Posch sacrifice fly and a run-scoring single from LeNoir.
Taylor (4-2), in the meantime, was in command from the start and did not allow a runner to reach second until the fifth inning, thanks in part to MacDonald throwing out a runner in the first and a double play in the fourth. He gave up only a pair of unearned runs in the sixth and retired 12 of the final 15 batters he faced. He also fanned seven to move into third on the Bullets career strikeout list with 228, passing Gettysburg Hall of Athletic Honor inductee Marc Favieri '90 with his sixth punch-out of the afternoon. Taylor fired 132 pitches - including 93 strikes - to earn his 20th career complete game.
LeNoir finished Game One 3-for-5 while junior
Ben Roessle (Summit, N.J./Summit) went 2-for-4. Simon scored two runs and drove in two runs.
Gettysburg returns to Centennial Conference action on Sunday, when it visits Dickinson College at 2:30 p.m. in a single nine-inning game.
