GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The day did not start out well for the Gettysburg College softball team with a loss in the opening game against Franklin & Marshall College, but the Bullets rebounded for a 9-4 victory in the nightcap to salvage a split in Centennial Conference action at Bobby Jones Field on Tuesday.
Gettysburg (17-15, 7-5 CC) watched Franklin & Marshall (13-16, 5-6 CC) bat around in both the third and fourth innings in a 22-9 loss in the opener. The Bullets scored the first five runs of the game highlighted by a pair of RBI triples by senior
Joy Hallfors (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) and junior
Maggie Maguire (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) in the third inning.
The Diplomats opened the floodgates in the third inning as 15 batters went to the plate. Franklin & Marshall posted 11 hits and 11 runs in the frame with Patricia Crigler providing a big blow with a three-run homer to left field.
The visitors sent 14 batters to the dish in the following inning leading to eight more runs. Franklin & Marshall finished the game with 20 hits, while the 22 runs scored by the Diplomats were the most by a Gettysburg opponent since Millersville University put up 27 in 1990.
The Bullets bounced back in the nightcap with two runs in the opening inning. Freshman
Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon) singled in the first run and Maguire drove in the second with a ground out.
Franklin & Marshall answered in its next at bat as pitcher Kaitlin Zampino slammed a two-run homer to left-center to tie the game.
The score stood at 4-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning when the hosts took control. After drawing a walk to lead off the inning, Maguire came around to score on a wild pitch. On the same play, an errant throw by the catcher to home allowed another run to come across. Junior
Brooke Kalman (Edgemont, Pa./Penncrest) brought home the final score of the inning with a single to right to make it 7-4.
The Bullets added two more runs in the sixth. Zengel doubled to left-center and scored on a triple by Maguire. After an attempted pinch-hit appearance by her dog Skippy who made his way through the gate to the field, sophomore
Emily Hall (Reston, Va./Flint Hill School) put the finishing touches on the victory with a pinch-hit RBI single to left field.
Zengel finished 6-for-8 with three doubles, three runs, and three RBI in the split. Zengel now has 13 doubles on the season, leaving her just two shy of the school's single-season record. Tighe posted three hits, two walks, two runs, three RBI and three stolen bases for the Bullets. Like Zengel, Tighe is on the cusp of a record as she is just one stolen base shy of Mandy Wilson's '02 season record of 21.
Hallfors logged four hits and three runs, while Maguire finished with three runs and three RBI. Freshman
Morgan Heinbach (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) went 2-for-3 with two runs in the opener, while senior
