GETTYSBURG, Pa. – McDaniel College scored three unearned runs in its final at bat to pick up a 5-3 victory in game two and complete a sweep of Gettysburg College in a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader at Bobby Jones Field on Sunday.
McDaniel (17-15, 6-6 CC) won the opener 2-0 as sophomore Caroline Brehm held Gettysburg (17-17, 7-7 CC) to four hits, while striking out 13. The Bullets scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead in the nightcap, but the Green Terror rallied for three runs with two outs to earn the win.
The victories move McDaniel into a tie with Gettysburg for fourth in the conference standings with only one week left to play. The Green Terror have four games left on the schedule, while the Bullets have only one conference series to play.
McDaniel picked up the only run it would need in the opening frame of game one. Rachel Sidney drew a lead-off walk, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout to the right side, and scored on a wild pitch.
Brehm set down the first 12 batters she faced, including eight by strikeout. Junior
Maggie Maguire (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) led off the fifth with a bloop single to left and then swiped second base. That's where she was stranded as Brehm struck out the side.
McDaniel added an insurance run in the fifth inning, but the visitors were denied more as Gettysburg picked up its second double play of the game with the bases packed.
The Bullets tallied two hits in the bottom of the seventh. The first base runner was caught stealing, while the second was left stranded at second after Brehm induced a groundout to shortstop and a pop-up to the mound.
Senior
Taylor Snyder (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) pitched well in the opening game, allowing two runs on eight hits, while striking out three.
Gettysburg struck first in the second game as senior
Joy Hallfors (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the second inning. The lead would hold until the fifth when Jackie Liebowitz plated two runs with a single through the right side.
The Bullets rallied in the home half of the sixth inning, taking advantage of a pair of Terror errors. With runners on second and third, freshman
Meghan Hisgen (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) slapped a double to right field to drive in both runs. The hosts looked to add more when sophomore
Melissa Tighe (Little Falls, N.J./Mt. St. Dominic Academy) singled through the right side, but Hisgen was thrown out at the plate by right fielder Amy Baumgardner.
Liebowitz started the rally for McDaniel with a one-out double to left field. A walk put the go-ahead run at first base, but Gettysburg was on the cusp of getting out of the inning unscathed with a fly-out to center field. The hosts were undone by an infield error that allowed the tying run to score and set the winning run at third. Sidney completed the comeback with a two-run double to left-center.
The Bullets picked up a two-out walk and a hit-by-pitch to bring the game-winning run to the plate. Brehm closed the decision by getting a fly-out in foul territory to third base.
Brehm improved to 16-8 after allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits, while striking out 10.
Snyder took the loss after giving up three runs (none earned) on three hits in 2 1/3 innings. Sophomore
Lindsey Treanor (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) took a no decision after allowing two runs on four hits with five strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.
Tighe and Hallfors each reached base twice via a single and a walk for Gettysburg. Freshman
Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon) connected on her 14th double of the season in the nightcap, leaving her one shy of tying the school record.
Gettysburg travels to Susquehanna University for a non-conference doubleheader on Monday, April 22, at 3:30 p.m.
