Bullets Down Penn State-York, 10-8

Eight Starters Bat Safely

Ben Roessle went 2-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs versus Penn State-York.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. –Junior Austin Davis (New York, N.Y./Riverdale Country School) went 3-for-5 with two runs and a pair of stolen bases to lead a balanced offensive attack as Gettysburg held off a late rally to beat Penn State-York 10-8 in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Kirchhoff Field.

Junior Ben Roessle (Summit, N.J./Summit) finished 2-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs for the Bullets (15-7), who outhit the Nittany Lions 14-10 and had eight of nine starters bat safely. Senior Brett Norton (Milwood, N.Y./Horace Greeley) pitched seven innings to earn the win, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks while tying a career-high with six strikeouts.

Dan Rogers went 4-for-5 with two home runs and six RBIs to pace the Lions (0-7). Starter Kyler Jelonek allowed six runs over five innings and was charged with the loss.

Gettysburg never trailed after pushing across two runs in the second. After York tied it with single runs in the fourth and fifth, the Bullets opened up some breathing room with a seven unanswered runs, including a four-run fifth. Junior Cam MacDonald (Norwell, Mass./Norwell), Davis, and junior Patrick O'Grady (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) singled to load the bases with nobody out before junior Al Posch (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) ripped a two-run double to left. Roessle would eventually drive home Posch with a single before scoring on a triple from junior Nate Simon (Gwynedd Valley, Pa./Abington Friends School).

In the seventh, Roessle provided the big blow with a two-run double before Simon drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to make it 9-2.

The Lions put up four runs in the eighth, including a three-run homer from Rogers that made it 9-5. Junior Joe Saladino (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) then came on in relief of Norton (1-0) and allowed a run but got the final three outs.

Davis led off the bottom of the inning with a single, stole second, and scored on a single by Cody with two outs to nudge Gettysburg's lead to 10-6. York added a pair of unearned runs against Saladino in the ninth.

Cody, sophomore Cory Karagjozi (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville), and MacDonald each finished with two hits. Posch added a pair of runs and RBIs while Simon also drove in two runs.

Gettysburg returns to Centennial Conference action on Friday, when it hosts Franklin & Marshall College at 3:30 p.m. in a single nine-inning game.
