Volleyball Splits on Opening Day of Battlefield Classic

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg rallied from a two sets to none deficit to win its season opener and came away with a split on Day One of the 12-team Battlefield Classic Friday evening in Bream Gymnasium.

The Bullets defeated Penn State-Altoona 3-2 but lost by a final of 3-2 versus Bridgewater College, with the Eagles prevailing 25-22, 21-25, 25-12, 23-25, and 15-10.

Senior Kelly Milione (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) piled up 27 digs in each match to lead Gettysburg.

After dropping its first two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-18, the Bullets (1-1) stormed back in their opener versus Penn State-Altoona. Gettysburg won 25-20 and 25-11 before scoring a 15-12 decision in the fifth and final set.

Senior Courtney Cyr (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) led the Orange and Blue against Altoona with 12 kills while freshman Megan Heyer (Lakeway, Texas/Mills E. Godwin [Va.]) added 11 kills. Senior Lizzy Kuhn (Wilmington, Del./Archmere Academy) distributed 38 assists while senior Sarah Gorski (Darien, Conn./Darien) contributed four service aces and four blocks.

Against Bridgewater, Gorski, sophomore Joosje Grevers (Westport, Conn./Staples), and Kuhn led the Bullets with eight kills apiece. Kuhn also handed out 31 assists, and sophomore Courtney Morrow (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) added three aces.

The Bullets conclude tournament play on Saturday, when they face Rutgers-Camden at 10 a.m. and Salisbury University at 2 p.m.
