WINCHESTER, Va. – One night after sweeping Messiah College in a non-conference match, the Gettysburg College volleyball team found itself on the other end of a sweep, dropping a 3-0 decision at Shenandoah University in a non-league affair Wednesday evening.
The Hornets (6-6) won by scores of 25-20, 25-23, and 25-22.
Senior Sarah Gorski (Darien, Conn./Darien) led Gettysburg (7-6) with eight kills and three blocks while freshman Laura Bergin (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) added seven kills and nine digs. Senior Kelly Milione (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) distributed 20 assists while sophomore Hannah Bentz (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) scooped 14 digs.
Shenandoah was led by Blake Parkes' 10 kills and eight digs.
The Hornets trailed only at 1-0 in the opening set and led by as much as 14-8. But the Bullets kept it close, drawing to within two (19-17) before a 5-1 spurt broke it open.
Gettysburg led by as much as four in the second set before Shenandoah rallied with a 6-1 run to take the lead (13-12) for good. The Bullets were able to tie it at 22-all after a Hornet attack error, but the hosts closed the match on a 3-1 surge.
The Bullets also enjoyed a substantial lead in the third set and went up 17-12 following a kill from senior Courtney Cyr (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West). Shenandoah came back with an 8-1 run to take the lead, only to see the Bullets go back in front (22-21) on an attack error. But the Hornets scored the final four points of the set.
Gettysburg continues its season on Saturday, when it visits Washington College in a Centennial Conference match beginning at 1 p.m.
