GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg reeled off the first 15 points of the fourth set to help seal a 3-1 victory over visiting Haverford College in a Centennial Conference volleyball affair inside Bream Gym on Saturday afternoon.
Gettysburg (8-9, 2-1 CC) dropped the first set against Haverford (10-4, 1-1 CC) 25-22 before sweeping the final three 25-22, 25-21, and 25-18. The Bullets ran out of gas in their second contest of the day as Elizabethtown College (11-8) overcame a two-set deficit to win in five sets (16-25, 25-27, 25-22, 27-25, 15-10).
After three tightly contested battles, Gettysburg raced out to a 15-0 advantage in the opening set with sophomore Hannah Bentz (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) holding serve. Bentz racked up four aces, while senior Sarah Gorski (Darien, Conn./Darien) put down four kills during the scoring spree.
Gorski finished the match with a team-high 17 kills and five blocks. Freshman Hannah Dallman (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) posted 10 kills, while sophomore Courtney Morrow (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) went for seven kills. Four players reached double figures in digs with senior Kelly Milione (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) putting up 21. Bentz added 16 digs and sophomore Alesha Miller (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) and freshman Laura Bergin (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) checked in with 12 and 10 digs, respectively.
Meg O'Day led Haverford with 18 kills, while Keri Godbe tallied 15 kills and 17 digs.
After falling to Haverford 3-1, Elizabethtown saw the Bullets dash out to a 9-1 lead en route to a win in the opening set. Gettysburg took a back-and-forth battle in the second set before the Blue Jays came alive, leading throughout set three and holding sway in most of the fourth contest. Gettysburg rebounded from a five-point deficit in the fourth frame to eventually draw match point at 25-24 before the visitors ran off the final three points to tie the match at two sets apiece.
In the decisive fifth set, Gettysburg earned an 8-6 advantage following an ace by Bergin. Elizabethtown stormed ahead to win nine of the next 11 points with three coming via service aces.
Gorski and Dallman each put down 15 kills. Gorski also recorded seven block assists. Morrow posted 10 kills and five blocks, while sophomore Joosje Grevers (Westport, Conn./Staples) logged eight blocks and five kills.
Kuhn turned in a career outing by turning in a pair of personal highs with 50 assists and 17 digs. Milione led the defensive effort with 22 digs, while Bentz added 13 digs and four aces. Miller and Bergin each chimed in with 11 digs, the latter adding eight kills.
Gettysburg returns to action next Saturday, Oct. 5, with a road trip to Swarthmore College at 1 p.m.
