ALLENTOWN, Pa.  – Freshman goalie Haley Mowery (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Northern) posted 14 saves for the Gettysburg College field hockey team at Muhlenberg College Friday night, but it wasn't quite enough as the Mules scored the game-winner in overtime to get by the Bullets 1-0.
 
It was a relatively quiet first half with Gettysburg (4-10, 2-6 CC) and Muhlenberg (11-3, 7-2 CC) combining for just eight shots. Both shots by the Bullets were blocked by the defense, while Mowery picked up four saves to keep the game scoreless.
 
Things really picked up for the hosts in the second half. The Mules posted 16 shots and nine penalty corners in the final period of regulation, but they could find no give in Gettysburg's defense. Mowery set the tone with a save on Muhlenberg's first shot of the second half. The Mules tossed a flurry of shots at the cage in the 52nd minute with Mowery stopping the first two and junior Christina Wright (Kingsville, Md./Fallston) swiping away the third for her second defensive save of the season.
 
Mowery knocked away a hot shot from the top of the circle by Kayleigh Thies in the 61st minute to preserve the shutout and force the extra period.
 
After being held without a shot in the second half, Gettysburg came out aggressively in the overtime session. The Bullets posted four penalty corners and four shots in the frame with two attempts by sophomore Catherine Towers (Midlothian, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) turned away by Sierra Lenker.
 
Thies finally put the game to rest, sweeping a shot past Mowery in the 83rd minute.
 
Muhlenberg finished with a 25-6 advantage in shots and a 13-8 edge in penalty corners.
 
Gettysburg closes out the season with a pair of games at home next week beginning with Franklin & Marshall College on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at 4 p.m.
