Box Score LANCASTER, Pa. – The Gettysburg College volleyball team saw its playoff chances take a big hit as Franklin & Marshall College upended the Bullets 3-1 inside the Mayser Center Wednesday night.
The victory lifted Franklin & Marshall (16-11, 5-4 CC) into a tie with Gettysburg (19-10, 5-4 CC) for fifth place in the Centennial Conference. With only one contest left in the regular season, the Diplomats now hold the tiebreaker advantage over the Bullets should both teams win or lose their season finales this weekend.
Franklin & Marshall largely controlled three of the four sets in defeating Gettysburg with scores of 25-11, 24-26, 25-16, and 25-15.
Sophomore
Laura Bergin (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) turned in a big night on the attack for Gettysburg with 17 kills. Unfortunately, the rest of the attack combined for just 15 kills and 21 errors.
Franklin & Marshall was paced by Ellie Ezekiel and Julie Harvey with 16 and 12 kills, respectively. Caroline Hubbard narrowly missed a triple-double with eight kills, 39 assists, and 11 digs.
Gettysburg jumped out with the match's first three points, but the lead faded quickly. Franklin & Marshall scored 21 of the next 25 points to take a 21-7 lead in the first set.
The Bullets rallied from a four-point deficit to take an 11-9 lead in set two. The Diplomats regained the advantage 20-19 before kills by freshman
Stephanie Blair (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and Bergin sandwiched around an attack error by the hosts lifted Gettysburg back in front 22-19. The Bullets would close out the win with a kill by Bergin and an attack error by the Dips.
Gettysburg committed 21 hitting errors in the final two sets as Franklin & Marshall cruised to easy wins.
Blair finished with 23 assists and 14 digs for the Bullets. Junior
Hannah Bentz (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) put up 14 digs and classmate
Alesha Miller (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) recorded 10 digs.
Gettysburg will face Johns Hopkins University (16-10, 7-2 CC) on the road this Saturday, Nov. 1, at 1 p.m. Franklin & Marshall closes the season against Dickinson College (6-14, 2-7 CC) on Saturday.
