Box Score GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Gettysburg College women's soccer team played Capital University to a scoreless draw for 110 minutes, but the Crusaders slipped past the Bullets 5-4 in a penalty-kick shootout to move on to the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament on Saturday at Messiah College.
Junior
Eliza Gray (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) made a season-high seven saves for Gettysburg (13-4-2), which tied the school record for single-season shutouts (13). Gray also tied the individual single-season school record for shutouts (10).
Capital moves on to the second round of the NCAA tournament and will meet second-ranked Messiah on Sunday at 5 p.m.
The Bullets led the shootout 3-2 after junior
Lauren Schapiro (Stamford, Conn./Stamford), senior
Molly Phillips (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury), and senior
Mary Kamovitch (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) all converted and Gray swatted away Capital's third kick. Phillips, amazingly, had not played the entire game or in either of Gettysburg previous two contests due to injury.
Both teams made their fourth kick, with senior
Georgia Ferguson (Bethel, Conn./Bethel) striking for the Bullets, to make it 4-2. However, Gettysburg's last two shots were saved or missed and he Crusaders made their final three PKs.
Gettysburg controlled possession in the first half, outshooting Capital 6-1 without allowing a shot on goal. The Bullets had several good looks early, including a rip by Schapiro in the fourth minute that hit the crossbar.
Gettysburg held a 5-4 edge in shots during the second half and nearly broke through midway through the period, but Capital goalie Kim Leitch made back-to-back diving saves on shots by senior
Brigid Behan (Newport, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey) and Schapiro.
Leitch collected her fourth save of the half and fifth and final stop of the day on a shot by Behan in the 86th minute, just before Gray made an outstanding diving stop with just under four minutes to play in the period.
Gray registered two more saves in the first overtime, and sophomore
Julia Ramsey (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) nearly ended it when her arcing shot from outside the box sailed over Leitch and glanced off the crossbar.
The Crusaders took the only shot in the second overtime, and it was also stopped by Gray.
Gettysburg concluded the season with its highest victory total since 2006, made its first NCAA tournament appearance since 2004, and earned their first national ranking since 2005.
