FORT MYERS, Fla. – Senior
Al Posch (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) went 2-for-3 and pushed his hitting streak to 34 games, but the Gettysburg College baseball team dropped a 14-2 decision to Alvernia University on the third day of its Spring Break trip to Florida.
Posch singled in his first at-bat for the third game in a row to extend his streak, which is now a Centennial Conference record by two games.
Senior
Patrick O'Grady (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) also went 2-for-3 and stroked a double for the Bullets (3-3), who are now 3-2 on their southern swing.
Gettysburg was blanked over the first eight innings before plating two runs in the ninth. The Bullets faced one of the nation's top pitchers in lefty Mike Weinhold, who was ranked by Baseball America in the preseason as the No. 5 Division III draft prospect. Weinhold (1-0) hurled seven shutout innings, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out six.
The Crusaders (4-2), the defending Commonwealth Conference champions, scored nine runs from the second through the fifth innings before adding five more in the seventh. They outhit the Bullets 16-6, with all of their hits coming on singles, while drawing 10 walks.
Freshman
Kyle Considine (Canaan, Conn./Taft School) made his collegiate debut as the Bullets' starting pitcher and allowed eight runs (five earned) on six hits and four walks over 3 1/3 innings. Classmate
Aaron Bezio (Stafford, Va./Mountain View), also making his Bullet debut, yielded one run in 1 1/3 innings. Senior
Rob Stalzer (Merrick, N.Y./Bellmore JFK) worked the final 4 1/3 innings and gave up five runs on seven hits and four walks.
The Bullets broke up the shutout in the ninth against reliever James Colgan. O'Grady and Posch led off with back-to-back walks before senior
Tommy LeNoir (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) doubled. O'Grady scored but Posch was thrown out at the plate. Senior
Nate Simon (Gwynedd Valley, Pa./Abington Friends School) capped the scoring with an RBI-single.
Gettysburg takes a day off on Wednesday before returning to action on Thursday with a single nine-inning game versus Monmouth (Ill.) College at 1 p.m.
