MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Freshman
Jamie Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) and the Bullets softball team capped a successful spring trip with victories over Penn State Altoona and Emmanuel College on Friday.
Gettysburg (8-1) put up five runs in the first inning en route to a 6-0 win over Penn State Altoona. Junior
Melissa Tighe (Little Falls, N.J./Mt. St. Dominic) and Abell reached base via a walk and a hit, respectively, and came around to score on a triple by sophomore
Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon). Zengel would also score on a throwing error. Sophomore
Meghan Hisgen (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) and junior
Emily Hall (Reston, Va./Flint Hill School) each turned in RBI singles later in the frame.
The Bullets would add another run in the second when Tighe singled to lead off the inning, stole second, and later came around to score on a wild pitch.
That was plenty of support for junior
Lindsey Treanor (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) who allowed only three hits en route to her first shutout of the season. She improved to 3-1 this spring after walking three and striking out four.
Each of the first six hitters in the lineup tallied a base knock with Zengel finishing 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI. Tighe finished 1-for-2 with two runs and a walk. The junior's stolen base also pushed her into sole possession of second place on Gettysburg's all-time list.
Against Emmanuel, the Bullets rallied from a 3-1 deficit with four runs over the final three innings to pick up a 5-3 victory. Abell recorded the first of her three hits in the game with a double to plate Tighe in the third inning.
Emmanuel logged three unearned runs in the fourth inning against sophomore
Michelle Fox (Newton, N.J./Blair Academy), but Gettysburg would answer with three runs in the top half of the fifth. The Bullets loaded the bags with one out and Abell and Zengel took advantage, the freshman slapping a two-run single and the sophomore adding an RBI hit.
Fox worked out of a jam in the fifth inning as Emmanuel loaded the bases with one out. The sophomore shut the door with a pop-up and a grounder, both to third base. That would be the final threat from the Saints as Fox retired the final six batters she faced.
Zengel picked up a sacrifice fly in the seventh to set the final score.
Abell finished 3-for-3 with a walk and three RBI. The freshman shortstop hit safely in all nine spring games and closed the week sporting a .577 batting average with 11 runs, seven RBI, and seven walks.
Zengel finished with a .500 batting average and 15 RBI for the week, including two RBI against Emmanuel. Like Abell, she hit safely in all nine contests. Tighe scored two runs and tallied her 100th career hit against Emmanuel.
Fox improved to 5-0 this spring after allowing three runs (none earned) on nine hits and two walks with six strikeouts. For the week, the sophomore allowed just one earned run over 29 innings (0.24 ERA) while pitching four complete games and striking out 21.
Gettysburg dropped only one game during its opening week – a one-run loss to Division II Ursuline College. The Bullets averaged more than seven runs per game, while the pitching staff logged a combined 1.17 ERA.
Gettysburg is scheduled to host Hood College on Tuesday, March 18, at 3 p.m.
