HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Freshman
Rich Power (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) held Juniata to three runs over 8 1/3 innings while picking up his first career victory as the Gettysburg College baseball team won its sixth game in a row, topping the Eagles 6-3 in a non-conference road game Thursday afternoon.
The Bullets (9-3) never trailed after jumping to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Gettysburg led 6-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth, when Juniata threatened by loading the bases with one out. But freshman
Aaron Bezio (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) came on to get the final two outs and pick up his first career save.
Power (1-0), who was making his first career start, struck out eight batters while scattering eight hits and three walks.
Anthony Lombardo finished 2-for-4 with a double to lead Juniata (3-12).
Eight of Gettysburg's nine starters batted safely while seniors
Austin Davis (New York, N.Y./Riverdale Country School),
Al Posch (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale),
Tommy LeNoir (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy), and
Cam MacDonald (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) all stroked two hits apiece.
The Bullets took their early lead on four hits and one error in the first. Davis led off with a single before O'Grady followed up with a double. Two batters later, Davis scored on a sacrifice fly from senior
Nate Simon (Gwynedd Valley, Pa./Abington Friends School), and LeNoir would single home O'Grady. LeNoir reached home on an error before junior
Mike Kielbasa (Ludlow, Mass./Loomis Chaffee School) came around to score on a single by classmate
Scott Zanghellini (Randolph, N.J./Randolph).
Gettysburg pushed its lead to 5-0 in the second, when MacDonald led off with a single and scored on a two-out single from Posch. But Juniata starter Eric Grace (0-1) settled in to blank the Bullets over the next four innings.
The Eagles got on the scoreboard with an unearned run in the fourth. But Power would go on to toss four more shutout innings before running into trouble in the ninth.
The Bullets padded their lead with a run in the top of the ninth against reliever Ryan Morrison. O'Grady drew one-out walk, moved to third on a single from Posch, and scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
In the bottom of the inning, Power retired the leadoff batter before a walk and two singles loaded the bases. Bezio then came on to get a strikeout before a run scored on a passed ball. Another walk loaded the bases again before a single made it 6-3 and brought the tying run to the plate. But Bezio induced a flyout to right to end the game.
Gettysburg continues its season on Saturday, when it travels to Point Stadium in Johnstown, Pa. to take on Mount Aloysius College in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 12:30 p.m.
