GRANTHAM, Pa.  – Messiah College picked up three runs in its final at bat to win game two 7-6 and close out a sweep of Gettysburg College in non-conference softball action Thursday.

Messiah (9-5) took the opener 6-1. Gettysburg (6-1) struck first as sophomore Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon) reached on an error and came around to score on a double by senior Maggie Maguire (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand).

That would be the extent of the offense for the visitors as Falcon hurler Mallory Rutledge allowed only two more hits over the final six innings. She finished with one walk and five strikeouts to pick up the victory.

Messiah cashed in with runs in each of the first four innings against sophomore Michelle Fox (Newton, N.J./Blair Academy). Becky Notte brought in the first two with a single to left-center in the first inning. The Falcons picked up another run in the second, two more in the third, and closed with a solo run in the fourth.

In the nightcap, Gettysburg led 2-1 before adding two more runs in the fifth frame. Zengel doubled in the first run and came around to score on a single by sophomore Meghan Hisgen (Northport, N.Y./Commack) to make it 4-1.

Messiah answered in the home half with three runs to tie it, but the Bullets jumped back in front in their next at bat with a pair of runs. Freshman Jamie Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) produced a sacrifice fly to score the first run and junior speedster Melissa Tighe (Little Falls, N.J./Mt. St. Dominic Academy) came around to score on a wild pitch for the second.

The hosts tied the game with a pair of extra-base hits in the bottom of the sixth. With runners on first and third with two outs, a grounder to first was mishandled and led to the eventual game-winning run.

Tighe finished 2-for-4 with a run and a stolen base for the Bullets in game two.

Gettysburg is slated to host Swarthmore College for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 29, at 1 p.m.
