Box Score 2 WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Gettysburg College softball team was held to three hits in a sweep at McDaniel College on Friday afternoon.
McDaniel (16-10, 7-3 CC) won the opener 3-0 and took the nightcap 10-1 in five innings. Caroline Brehm pitched both ends of the sweep for the Green Terror, finishing with 18 strikeouts over 12 innings.
Gettysburg (14-9, 3-5 CC) received a lead-off single by junior
Melissa Tighe (Little Falls, N.J./Mt. St. Dominic) to start the opener, but only one more hit would follow over the final six innings. The Bullets threatened in the fifth with back-to-back hit-by-pitches loading the bags with two outs, but a grounder to third base ended the frame.
McDaniel picked up two runs in the second inning on a double by Rachel Sidney. A two-out single by Caitlin Justice in the third finished off the scoring in the game.
Brehm was even more dominant in game two, fanning 10 Bullets over five innings and allowing just one batter to reach base. That lone batter was sophomore
Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon), who smashed a home run off the left-field foul pole in the fourth inning to cut the host's lead to 2-1.
The Green Terror broke the game open with eight runs in the fourth inning. The frame included two-run doubles by Amy Baumgardner and Olivia Kipe and a two-run single by Justice.
Gettysburg heads to Washington College for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 12, at 1 p.m.
