Box Score 2 HAVERFORD, Pa. – Senior
Nate Simon (Gwynedd Valley, Pa./Abington Friends School) broke the Gettysburg College career hits record and the 22nd-ranked Bullets split a Centennial Conference (CC) doubleheader at Haverford College on Saturday.
Gettysburg (29-6, 14-3 CC) dropped the opener 9-1 but claimed a 6-2 victory in the nightcap, which was Head Coach
John Campo's 1,000th game coached at Gettysburg.
Simon surpassed the former mark of 193 hits – previously held by Joe Bonyai '07 – when he stroked an RBI-double to left in the second game.
Haverford (18-17, 11-7 CC) concluded its Centennial Conference schedule and will finish second in the conference standings to earn the No. 2 seed in the CC playoffs. The Bullets, who have clinched the No. 1 seed, will wrap up its league slate on Sunday when it hosts McDaniel College at 2 p.m. in a makeup game.
In the opener, the Bullets were hurt by a season-high five errors, which led to seven unearned runs, including two in the first against senior starter Drew Felsnethal (Mount Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley). Haverford opened up some breathing room with a four-run fourth, capped by a two-run homer by Zach Taylor that made it 6-0. The final three runs of the inning were unearned.
The Bullets scored their lone run against starter John Miraglia with a three-hit fifth before the Fords tacked on three runs (one earned) in the seventh against freshman
Aaron Bezio (Stafford, Va./Mountain View).
Felsenthal (6-3) was charged with the loss, allowing six runs (one earned) on nine hits and three walks over six innings. Miraglia (1-3) went seven innings to earn the win, yielding seven hits and striking out four.
Gettysburg never trailed in the nightcap after pushing across two unearned runs in the second against Casey Fox. The Fords tied it with single runs in the second and third against freshman
Rich Power (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) before the Bullets went up 4-2 in the fifth on an RBI-single from Posch and Simon's record-breaking double. Posch and senior
Patrick O'Grady (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) singled in runs in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively, to set the final score.
Sophomore
Luke Lawrence (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) came on in the seventh and tossed three shutout innings while scattering four hits to collect his fourth save of the year, tying the Gettysburg single-season record. Power (5-1) worked six innings to earn the victory, allowing two runs on four hits and seven walks while fanning three.
Posch, Simon, senior
Tommy LeNoir (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy), and senior
Cam MacDonald (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) all collected two hits apiece for Gettysburg.
Fox (2-3) suffered the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits through five innings.
