GETTYSBURG, Pa.  – Gettysburg College mounted a pair of late rallies on Sunday against Haverford College, but the Bullets fell short of victories in both ends of the Centennial Conference doubleheader at Bobby Jones Field.

Gettysburg (19-15, 5-11 CC) picked up two runs in its final at bat before falling 5-4 to Haverford (24-9, 12-4 CC) in the opening game. Trailing 8-0 in the fifth inning, the Bullets rallied for five runs in the bottom of the inning, but the hosts came up empty in their final two at bats in an 8-5 loss.

Gettysburg took advantage of two errors to plate the first two runs in the first game. Senior Maggie Maguire (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) led off the inning with a single and an error and a walk loaded the bases for the Bullets. Haverford looked to get the lead run out at home on a grounder to shortstop, but a wild throw over the catcher led to a pair of runs crossing home plate.

The Bullets were held without a hit over the next three innings by Emma Winesett. Meanwhile, the Ford bats came alive in the third inning with four runs. Kristin Tatum provided the big blow with a two-run triple to right-center. Haverford added another run in the sixth on a single by Julie Garlick to jump in front 5-2.

Gettysburg took advantage of a pitching change and a pair of errors to bring across two runs in its final at bat. Kendall Chambers entered the game to face sophomore Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./Hunterdon Central) with two outs. Chambers managed to get Zengel to ground into a force out at second base to end the game.

Winesett improved to 10-2 with the win, while Chambers earned a save.

In the nightcap, Haverford busted out for six runs in the second and third innings. The Fords sent 10 batters to the plate in the second frame, racking up four runs on three hits, three walks, and an error. Two more runs scored in the third via bases-loaded walks.

Haverford put the Bullets on the brink of a loss with two runs in the top of the fifth to make it 8-0. Junior Emily Hall (Reston, Va./Flint Hill School) jump-started a rally in the bottom of the inning, stroking a double to the fence in left field. The first run scored on an error and three more came in on back-to-back-to-back singles by freshman Jamie Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton), Zengel, and Maguire. The fifth run scored on a force out at first before the inning ended on a strikeout with runners on second and third.

Gettysburg was poised for more runs in the sixth after senior Brooke Kalman (Edgemont, Pa./Penncrest) picked up an infield double with some heads-up base-running. Kalman hit a bloop in the space between the pitcher's circle and first base and when the second baseman made an unsuccessful dive at the ball, the Bullet senior dashed around first to an unmanned second base. After a walk to junior Melissa Tighe (Little Falls, N.J./Mt. St. Dominic) put runners on first and second, a force out at third closed the frame.

Chambers pitched a perfect seventh to earn her second save of the day. Sara Tauriello improved to 8-1 after allowing just four hits and striking out six in 5.2 innings.

Kalman finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI for Gettysburg, while Tighe reached base twice via a hit and a walk.

Gettysburg closes the season with a non-conference game against Hood on Monday, April 28, at 3:30 p.m.
