Softball Splits Season Finale with Hood

Bullets win opening game 17-2

Maggie Maguire moved into second on Gettysburg's all-time RBI list with five in the split with Hood.

GETTYSBURG, Pa.  – The Gettysburg College softball team capped the season with a split in a non-conference doubleheader with Hood College Monday evening at Bobby Jones Field.
 
Gettysburg (20-16) pushed across runs in all four of its at bats, including seven in the third inning as part of a 17-2 victory in the opening game. Hood (15-21) returned the favor in game two, overcoming the wet weather to score nine runs in the sixth inning en route to a 13-8 decision.
 
Sophomore Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./Hunterdon Central) capped a tremendous all-around season by going 7-for-8 with two doubles, six runs, and six RBI in the split. Junior Emily Hall (Reston, Va./Flint Hill School) went 5-for-7 with two runs and four RBI, while senior Maggie Maguire (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) finished 4-for-7 with three runs and five RBI.
 
The opening game was all Gettysburg as the hosts jumped in front with a run on a double by Maguire in the first inning. Four more runs would come across the plate in the second, including three on a double to left by Zengel.
 
After Hood picked up a pair of runs in the top of the third, the Bullets blew the game open with seven runs in the home half of the frame. Thirteen players went to the plate with both Hall and sophomore Morgan Heinbach (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) reaching base twice in the inning. Zengel added another hit to drive in two more runs and Maguire followed her with a single to drive in a run.
 
Maguire and Hall each provided RBI singles in the fourth inning as the Bullets added five more runs to set the final score.
 
Zengel finished 4-for-4 with three runs and five RBI. Maguire was 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI, while Halll went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Heinbach reached base four times, scored two runs, and drove in two.
 
Sophomore Michelle Fox (Newton, N.J./Blair Academy) improved to 10-8 with the win. Fox allowed two runs on four hits and struck out two over five innings of work.
Gettysburg grabbed a 3-1 lead in the first inning of game two. Junior Melissa Tighe (Little Falls, N.J./Mt. St. Dominic) swiped two bases to start the game, scoring the opening run on a double-steal with freshman Jamie Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton).
 
Hood came right back to take the lead with three runs in the top of the second. Carly Farr's sacrifice fly to center field gave the Blazers a 4-3 lead.
 
The Bullets jumped back in front on a two-run single by Hall in the third inning. Gettysburg added another run on a single by Zengel in the fourth to take a 6-4 lead.
 
With a steady rain falling to the ground, Hood brought across nine runs in the sixth inning. Thirteen batters went to the dish with eight providing base hits. Marissa Saglimbeni drove in three runs with a single and a triple in the frame.
 
Gettysburg was only able to get back two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Maguire and a single by sophomore Meghan Hisgen (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) to finish off the scoring in the game.
 
Zengel went 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI. The sophomore outfielder recorded the sixth-best season batting average in school history at .445, while finishing second in program history with 53 hits and 86 total bases. Zengel also finished third on the season list in doubles (13) and RBI (39).
 
Maguire picked up a pair of RBI in game two to finish second all-time at Gettysburg with 116. She also scored her 100th career run in the nightcap, becoming one of just three Bullets to accumulate 100 RBI and 100 runs. Gettysburg's all-time home run leader with 15, Maguire also finished top 10 in program history in walks (3rd, 63), doubles (4th, 32), total bases (5th, 239), slugging average (7th, .562), and hits (9th, 144).
 
Hisgen went 3-for-4 with two RBI in game two, while Hall, Tighe, and Abell each finished 2-for-4.
