Six Selected to Hall of Athletic Honor

Induction set for Homecoming Weekend Sept. 19-21

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College Hall of Athletic Honor will add six individuals to its ranks this fall as part of Homecoming Weekend Sept. 19-21.

The newest members of the Hall will be Peter Casares '98 (men's swimming), Kelly Geise '95 (women's basketball), Peter Jurgs '79 (men's track and field), Megan Murphy '03 (women's lacrosse), Chip Rossi '89 (baseball, football), and Mandy Wilson '02 (women's basketball, softball). The six will be formally inducted into the Hall of Athletic Honor on Friday, Sept. 19, at 6:45 p.m. in the College Union Building ballroom.

Peter Casares was a five-time All-American in the pool for the Bullets. The Glastonbury, Conn., native served as team captain twice and guided Gettysburg to four consecutive Centennial Conference titles. Casares garnered 17 all-conference awards, including nine first-team selections. At the 1998 NCAA Division III Championships, he earned national distinction in five events while leading the Bullets to a 12th-place showing – the program's best finish at nationals to date. Following graduation, Casares began a coaching career that included stops at Kenyon College and Wabash College before his current position at Bates College.

Few players were as dominant as Kelly Geise on both ends of the basketball court. During her career, Geise powered her way to 1,342 points and a school-record 875 rebounds. The Sunbury, Pa., native was the program's first All-Centennial Conference First Team selection in 1994-95 when she averaged 15.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game while leading the Bullets to a 20-5 overall record and an appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Hailing from Wharton, N.J., Peter Jurgs turned in one of the greatest throwing displays in school history as a sophomore, winning every javelin event he competed in except nationals. After claiming the MAC title in the event, Jurgs turned in a school record heave of 213 feet, two inches to finish fifth at the NCAA Division III Championships. He broke the school record by nearly two feet and no Bullet has managed to come within 12 feet of that distance in over three decades. Jurgs contributed to a pair of MAC team championships before being limited by injuries in his final two campaigns.

Megan Murphy was one of the most prolific scorers in school and conference history on the lacrosse field. The Wilton, Conn., native scored a school record 284 points during her tenure, including a school and conference record 140 points in 2003. A two-time All-American, Murphy was named the Inside Lacrosse Division III Offensive Player of the Year in 2003. She was a three-time all-conference selection and the 2003 Centennial Conference Player of the Year. During her tenure, she led Gettysburg to a 65-15 record, three conference titles, and three national playoff appearances.

Chip Rossi was a dual threat on the football and baseball fields. During the fall, The New Castle, Del., native spent two seasons as a defensive back before moving under center as the starting quarterback in 1988. On the baseball diamond, Rossi was a three-time All-Middle Atlantic Conference selection and two-time All-Mid-East Region honoree as a catcher/outfielder. He finished his tenure holding 13 school records, including career home runs (11) and career RBI (105). Rossi helped Gettysburg to a pair of MAC titles (1986, 1987) and an appearance in the NCAA playoffs in 1988.

Mandy Wilson from McClure, Pa., was one of the most gifted athletes to ever don the orange and blue. In basketball, Wilson was a three-year letterwinner and led the team in steals and assists in each of her first two seasons. She left an even bigger legacy on the softball diamond, setting nearly three dozen school records over her four years. Wilson was a four-time All-Centennial Conference selection and two-time CC Player of the Year at third base. She guided Gettysburg to the conference title and the program's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 1999. Wilson remains Gettysburg's career leader in a number of categories, including batting average (.432), runs (141), triples (26), and RBI (120).

Additionally, the 1964 football team will be honored as the first "Team of Distinction" at the 2014 Hall of Athletic Honor Induction Ceremony. Coached by Eugene Haas '43, the squad defied the odds to capture the program's first and only Middle Atlantic Conference University Division championship. The Bullets went 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the MAC, defeating the likes of Hofstra University (27-7), Bucknell University (12-7), University of Delaware (22-19), Lehigh University (39-7), Muhlenberg College (51-20), Lafayette College (21-3), and Juniata College (41-17). Five players from that team have already gained entry into the Hall, including Ken Snyder '65, Irv Stohecker '65, Dale Boyd '66, Jim Ward '66, and Joe Egresitz '67.
