GETTYSBURG, Pa. – For the second time in three seasons, the Gettysburg College women's lacrosse team will welcome Cabrini College to Clark Field for the NCAA Division III Tournament this Saturday, May 10, at 1 p.m.
Cabrini (14-5) picked up a 13-4 win over Arcadia University in the opening round of the national playoffs on Wednesday night. The Cavaliers, champions of the Colonial States Athletic Conference, have been to the NCAA postseason 11 times, posting a 2-10 record.
One of those playoff losses came at the hands of Gettysburg (16-2) in 2012. In the opening round of the tourney, the Bullets pasted a 22-7 loss on the Cavaliers. Senior
Katie Blumenthal (Malvern, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) and junior
Bridget Kenny (Gladstone, N.J./Bernards) combined for eight goals and three assists in the victory.
Gettysburg has won all six meetings with Cabrini since the series began in 2005. In each case, the Bullets turned in at least 20 goals and have won by an average margin of over 14 goals per game.
"We are familiar with Cabrini's style of play and they have played many common opponents," said Gettysburg coach
Carol Cantele '83, who has led the Bullets to 13 consecutive national playoff appearances. "They are a scrappy and competitive e team. They run the ball well and are capable of getting goals in short periods of time."
Gettysburg earned is 14th trip overall to NCAAs by claiming an automatic bid as the Centennial Conference champion. It was the Bullets' third consecutive and ninth overall conference title. Gettysburg, which won the national title in 2011 and has advanced to the final four five times in the last nine years, is 21-12 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
The Bullets will aim to get off on the right foot as they look at the prospect of hosting throughout the postseason. A win over Cabrini would give the team regional hosting rights. Gettysburg College and Clark Field have already been selected as hosts of the 2014 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship set for May 24-25.
