GETTYSBURG, Pa.  – Freshman Haley Mowery (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Northern) held off No. 9 Ursinus College with a career-high 15 saves, but the Bears eventually powered past Gettysburg College 5-0 in Centennial Conference field hockey action at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
 
Ursinus (4-1, 1-0 CC) dominated control of the ball early in the game and tallied 14 shots and eight penalty corners in the first half alone. Mowery swatted away four shots before an unlucky carom off the post found its way to Amber Steigerwalt for the game's first goal in the 20th minute.
 
Gettysburg (2-3, 0-1 CC) held off the Bears for the remainder of the half despite being down two players at one point because of back-to-back green cards with just under 10 minutes left. Mowery added two more stops to keep the score at 1-0 at the break.
 
Reigning CC Player of the Year Megan Keenan started the visitor's offensive surge in the final period, knocking home a penalty stroke off of Mowery's glove and into the cage at 40:59. The Bears continued to push down the field and added three more goals in the game's final 14 minutes, including two by Danielle Stong.
 
Junior Mari Bigley (Duncannon, Pa./Susquenita) fired off a pair of shots at the goal late in the contest, but both were turned away by goalie Danielle DeSpirito.
 
Ursinus finished with a 36-4 edge in shots and a 21-1 advantage in penalty corners.
 
Mowery's 15 saves were the most by a Bullet goalie since Jessy O'Neil '04 tallied 22 against Ursinus in 2003. Junior Emily Van Horn (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) also posted the 12th defensive save of her career, putting her into a tie for second in program history.
 
Gettysburg faces Dickinson College on the road on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 4 p.m.
