Box Score NEW YORK – The Gettysburg College men's basketball fell behind 30-22 at halftime and was unable to get closer than seven in the second half as New York University defeated the Bullets 60-44 on the first day of the NYU Holiday Classic on Friday afternoon.
Sophomore guard
Pete Christ (Pittstown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) led Gettysburg (6-4) with 15 points while sophomore center
Mlynue Reeves (Washington, D.C./Church Farm School [Pa.]) scored a career-high eight points and tied a career-best with seven rebounds.
Senior guard
Sean Gordon (Broomall, Pa./Malvern Prep) reached a milestone for the Bullets, becoming just the 14th player in school history to reach 200 career assists with the first of his three helpers for the game.
Evan Kupferberg posted 22 points and nine rebounds to lead NYU (6-2), which won its fifth game in a row and held the Bullets to a season-low 32.2 percent shooting mark from field. Costis Gontikas added 15 points for the Violets, who scored 42 points in the paint, while Ross Udine contributed 10 points and eight assists.
Gettysburg led for only the opening minutes of the game, with NYU taking the lead for good on a Udine 3-pointer with 15:59 on the clock. Christ made it an 11-8 game on a reverse lay-up with 14:31 showing, but that's when the Violets ran off an 11-2 run to open up a 12-point advantage.
The Bullets answered with a 7-0 spurt, capped by a Gordon jumper with 10:18 left in the opening half that pulled his team to within five (22-17). But that's as close as Gettysburg would get the rest of the way.
A jumper from sophomore forward
Tanner Kirkpatrick (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) made it 35-28 with 15:33 left, and after the Bullets trailed by 13, a lay-in from junior forward
Kevin Gladstone (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) trimmed it to 47-38 with 4:16 to go. However, NYU pulled away with a 10-3 run, with Kupferberg powering the surge with eight points.
The Bullets return to action on Saturday when they take on Manhattanville College at noon in the final day of the Holiday Classic.
