Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Gettysburg College women's soccer team allowed just two shots on goal but dropped a 1-0 decision at 20th-ranked and undefeated Swarthmore College in Centennial Conference (CC) match Saturday evening.
Facing a nationally-ranked opponent for the third-straight game, the Bullets (5-2-4, 2-2 CC) held a 13-8 shot advantage but could not dent goalie Reba Magier, who made four saves for the Garnet (11-0, 5-0 CC).
Gettysburg had been 1-0-2 versus nationally-ranked teams on the season heading into Saturday's match and was coming off a 1-1 tie versus No. 14 Misericordia on Wednesday and a 1-0 win over then-No. 22 Haverford last Saturday.
In a defensively-controlled first half, the two sides managed just six shots. Gettysburg outshot Swarthmore 4-2 in the opening period and attempted the only shot on goal in the stanza – an attempt from sophomore
Shannon Brady (Glen Head, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) that was saved by Magier in the 38th minute.
The offense picked up in the second half, when the Bullets outshot the Garnet 9-6. On the third shot of the period, Claire O'Brien headed home a cross from Katherine Zavez in the 50th minute for the eventual game-winning goal.
Less than a minute later, freshman
Lauren Miesemer (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) took a shot that was saved by Magier. Neither side managed another shot on goal until senior
Eliza Gray (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) made her lone save of the night in the 70th minute.
The Bullets threatened late, taking five shots over the final seven minutes. They also earned a corner kick – their first of the match – with less than a minute left, leading to a loose-ball scrum in front of the net. But both ensuing shots were blocked, and an offside call against the Bullets in the closing seconds sealed the win for Swarthmore.
The game featured a sister-versus-sister match-up of Gettysburg defender
Aoife Schanche (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) and Swarthmore forward Aine Schanche - both starters for their respective teams.
Gettysburg returns to Centennial Conference play on Wednesday, when it visits Dickinson College at 4 p.m.
