Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the decisive fifth set and held off a late charge by Franklin & Marshall for a 15-11 victory to seal a 3-2 decision in Centennial Conference volleyball action inside Bream Gym Wednesday night.
Gettysburg (14-12, 4-5 CC) won with scores of 16-25, 25-21, 25-22, 20-25, and 15-11. After committing 10 errors in the opening set, the Bullets led throughout the second frame to tie the match.
The two teams put in a back-and-forth battle in the third set with 11 ties and five lead changes. After Franklin & Marshall (13-14, 5-4 CC) took a 21-20 lead, back-to-back kills by sophomore
Lauren Godshalk (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) and junior
Laura Bergin (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) and a service ace by senior libero
Alesha Miller (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) put the Bullets back in front. Bergin sealed the third-set victory with a pair of kills to lift the hosts in front 2-1 in the match.
Franklin & Marshall burst out to an eight-point lead in the fourth frame following a kill by Kelsey Michenko that set the score at 17-9. Gettysburg closed the gap to 22-19, but another kill by Michenko and a pair of hitting errors by the hosts sealed the decision and forced a fifth confrontation.
The Diplomats opened the final set with three consecutive hitting errors. After F&M picked up its first point, the Bullets rattled off the next five tallies with Miller starting the run with a well-placed attack attempt from the back row for a kill. Bergin smashed an overpass to make it 8-1.
The visitors were down, but hardly out, clawing back to 12-10 after a six-point run. A timeout by Gettysburg helped end the spurt as Godshalk connected on a kill. After another Diplomat point, Bergin went for a quick push off a deflection from the net and caught the defense for a kill to set up match point. An attack error by Franklin & Marshall capped the victory for the Bullets.
Bergin recorded 15 kills and 13 digs for Gettysburg. Godshalk added eight kills, while seniors
Courtney Morrow (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) and
Joosje Grevers (Westport, Conn./Staples) and sophomore
Maddie Weikert (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) each tallied five kills.

Stephanie Blair (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) picked up 31 assists and 17 digs. Miller led the defense with a career-high 25 digs and sophomore
Katherine Gilbert (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) added a dozen digs.
Ellie Ezekiel posted 19 kills and 19 digs for Franklin & Marshall. Allison Edelstein contributed 49 assists and 13 digs, while Alyssa Sanchez logged 27 digs.
Gettysburg closes its season against Johns Hopkins University inside Bream Gym on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 1 p.m.
