Box Score 2 GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Laura Bergin (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) posted 19 kills and 21 digs, but it wasn't enough to lift Gettysburg College past Haverford College as the Fords held on for a five-set victory in a Centennial Conference volleyball match inside Bream Gym on Saturday.
Gettysburg (9-9, 1-2 CC) fell to Haverford (11-6, 2-1 CC) by scores of 20-25, 25-16, 25-22, 23-25, and 15-8. The Bullets salvaged a split on the day by defeating Randolph College (2-16) in three sets (25-13, 25-12, 25-17).
Gettysburg came out firing against the Fords and used a 6-0 run to take a 10-7 lead following a kill by sophomore
Lauren Godshalk (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan). The hosts led by as many as eight in the first set.
Despite trailing early in the second set, Haverford ended the frame on a 15-4 run to even the score. The Fords trailed briefly in the third set prior to a 9-2 run which opened up an 18-11 lead. A hitting error by Meg O'Day allowed Gettysburg to cut the deficit to 24-22, but O'Day made up for the miscue by slamming down an overpass for the winning kill.
The Bullets never trailed in the fourth set, jumping out to a 7-2 lead and holding a 20-13 advantage later in the frame. Haverford roared back with a 9-2 run to tie the match at 22. With the score tied at 23, senior
Courtney Morrow (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) and Bergin registered back-to-back kills to once again force a tie.
The two teams traded blows in the decisive set, but following a 5-5 tie the Fords leaped in front with a 6-1 spurt and never looked back.
Bergin accounted for a career-high 74 attacks in the match and tied her personal mark for digs. Godshalk finished with nine kills and four blocks. Sophomore
Stephanie Blair (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) dished out 36 assists and put up 15 digs. Sophomore
Katherine Gilbert (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) posted 21 digs, while seniors
Alesha Miller (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) and
Hannah Bentz (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) tallied 15 and 13 digs, respectively.
Gettysburg had no issue with Randolph, recording a .292 attack percentage and nine team blocks. Bergin finished off a big day with 14 kills with no hitting errors, while Godshalk posted 10 kills and three blocks. Morrow posted nine kills and four blocks.
Gilbert recorded 20 or more digs for the third time in four matches and the sixth time this season after posting 20 against the Wildcats. Miller put up a dozen digs and sophomore
Maddie Weikert (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) posted 13 digs. Blair and freshman
Rachel Gombatz (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) combined for 32 assists.
