Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Saturday's Centennial Conference volleyball match between Gettysburg College and Johns Hopkins University featured a combined 27 ties and lead changes as the visiting Blue Jays held off the Bullets for a 3-1 decision inside Bream Gym.
Johns Hopkins (12-10, 8-2 CC) won the match with scores of 25-23, 25-20, 22-25, and 25-23.
The opening contest set the pace for the back-and-forth battle with 10 ties and five lead changes. Gettysburg (14-13, 4-6 CC) stayed in front for most of the match until a service error and ace gave Johns Hopkins (12-10, 8-2 CC) a 21-20 lead. The Bullets regained a one-point lead at 22-21 before the Blue Jays posted three of the final four points to close the set.
Johns Hopkins controlled most of set two, while Gettysburg led throughout the third contest. In the fourth, the Bullets jumped out to an 8-2 advantage, but the Blue Jays steadily chipped away and used a 12-5 run to take their first lead at 21-20. A kill by Elizabeth Wuerstle and a pair of service aces set up match point for the visitors at 24-21 and after a short comeback by the Bullets, Eric Johnston polished off the win with a kill.
Junior
Laura Bergin (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) paced Gettysburg with 13 kills. Bergin totaled 351 kills this season, the most by a Bullet in a decade. Sophomore
Maddie Weikert (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) tallied seven kills and senior
Joosje Grevers (Westport, Conn./Staples) posted six kills.
Sophomore setter
Stephanie Blair (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) finished with five kills, 31 assists, three aces, and 12 digs. Senior
Alesha Miller (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) paced the defense with 21 digs, while classmate
Hannah Bentz (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) totaled 11 digs.
Johnston posted 18 kills and nine digs for Johns Hopkins. Wuerstle recorded 11 kills and 10 digs and Kristi Rhead picked up 41 assists and 14 digs.
