Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The weather wasn't quite cold enough to keep Gettysburg College at bay in its season opener as the sixth-ranked Bullets scored the first six goals on the way to a 14-6 win over No. 18 Stevenson University at Clark Field.

Gettysburg (1-0), which won its 15th consecutive season opener, saw six players hit the scoring column with senior Mandy Buell (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) hitting the back of the net four times as part of a career-high seven points. Senior Bridget Kenny (Gladstone, N.J./Bernards) added three goals, while juniors Maggie Connolly (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) and Amanda Borucki (Westminster, Md./North Carroll) and freshman Katie Landry (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) each tallied two goals.

The opening nine minutes were fairly quiet as Gettysburg and Stevenson (0-1) fought to control the ball amidst freezing temperatures. Borucki tossed in the first goal of the season just over nine minutes in with Buell finding Kenny in front of the cage five minutes later. Landry added her first collegiate tally at 13:48.

The Bullets zoomed ahead with three goals over a 31-second span. Buell connected on a free-position attempt at 11:54 and Landry tossed in her second goal 14 seconds later. Buell hooked up with Kenny 17 seconds later to make it 6-0.

After Stevenson posted its first two goals, Kenny completed a hat trick with her third goal following a pass by junior Samantha Aiello (Sparks, Md./Maryvale Prep) with 19 seconds left.

The hosts continued to press the advantage with two quick goals to start the final frame, including a free-position goal by Buell at 25:42. Amanda LeGar accounted for two goals and an assist as Stevenson cut the margin to 10-5 with 11:02 remaining, but Buell fueled a 3-0 run with two goals and an assist to boost the advantage to 13-5 at 6:23.

Gettysburg out-shot Stevenson 24-11 and finished with a 19-16 lead in ground balls, but the Mustangs held a 12-11 advantage in draw controls.

Senior Gretchen Boehmcke (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) paced the defensive effort with four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Senior Kate Higgins (Oreland, Pa./William Penn Charter School) posted three ground balls and one caused turnover. Sophomore goalie Shannon Keeler (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) finished with three saves and a pair of ground balls.

LeGar led Stevenson with three goals, one assist, four ground balls, and three caused turnovers. Kathryn Merrick and Olivia Monteiro each posted one goal and one assist.

Gettysburg hosts Messiah College for a non-conference meeting on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 1 p.m.
