Wisconsin Lutheran Rallies Past Baseball

Tom Finishes 5-for-6

Connor Tom's five hits were the most by a Bullet in nearly two years.
Box Score

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Wisconsin Lutheran College scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth and the Warriors rallied to beat the Gettysburg College baseball team 11-10 and snap the Bullets' four-game winning streak during their Spring Break trip to Florida.

Gettysburg (4-2) lost despite posting season-high totals for runs and hits (12). Sophomore Connor Tom (Reinholds, Pa./Conrad Weiser) led the Bullets at the plate, finishing 5-for-6 with a triple and two runs. His five hits were the most by a Bullet since Al Posch '14 went 5-for-6 in a 15-11 win over Dickinson College on April 9, 2013. Classmate Will Anderson (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central ) was 2-for-2 with a triple and two RBIs.

The Bullets led 10-5 heading into the seventh-inning stretch, only to see Wisconsin Lutheran (3-2) end the game with six unanswered runs. The Warriors scored two in the seventh and once in the eighth to make it 10-8. Then in the ninth, Gettysburg was one out away from a win after Wisconsin Lutheran put runners on the corners with two outs; however, the Warriors scored single runs on a single, a double steal, and a walk-off single.

Sophomore Chase Stopyra (Ocean, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) pitched the first 4 2/3 innings for Gettysburg and came away with a no-decision. Junior Luke Lawrence (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) tossed the final 1 1/3 innings and was tagged with the loss. He allowed three runs on four hits and two hit batsmen.

Sam Mattheis went 4-for-6 and scored the game-winning run for Wisconsin Lutheran, which stroked 19 hits, while Brandon Mantz went 4-for-5 at the plate. Jacob Smrz (1-0) blanked the Bullets over the final 2 1/3 innings to earn the win.

The Warriors never led until they scored the game-winning run, though they tied the game three times.

The Bullets took a 2-0 lead in the third on back-to-back RBI-triples from Tom and Anderson, then went up 4-2 with a two-run fifth on the strength of consecutive sacrifice flies from Anderson and junior Henry Klimowicz (Allenhurst, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy).

After Wisconsin Lutheran pulled even again with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, the Bullets reclaimed the lead (5-4) in the sixth when junior Andy Kelley (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) walked and scored on a fielder's choice. The Warriors tied it for the third time in the bottom of the frame, only to see Gettysburg put up a five-spot in the seventh, when it sent 11 batters to the plate. Kelley, junior Shawn Moffitt (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East), and senior Cory Karagjozi (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) all roped RBI-singles in the inning as the Bullets pushed their advantage to 10-5. Gettysburg was poised to extend its lead even further after Tom singled and Anderson was hit with a pitch to load the bases, but Smrz induced an inning-ending roundout.

The Bullets continue their trip on Friday, when they take on Coast Guard in a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m.
