Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla. – For the second time in six days, senior
Eric Hungerford (New Preston, Conn./Shepaug Valley) and sophomore
Rich Power (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) turned in solid pitching performances, but this time the Bullets came away with a sweep, downing previously-undefeated Coast Guard 4-3 and 8-3 on Friday – the next-to-last day of Gettysburg's season-opening Spring Break trip.
Hungerford, who tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts, threw a five-hit complete game while earning his 20th career win in the opener before Power worked six innings and fanned eight in the nightcap. The same two pitchers combined to allow just one run in 13 innings as the Bullets split their season-opening doubleheader with Baruch College this past Sunday.
Senior
Scott Zanghellini (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) led Gettysburg at the plate, finishing 4-for-6.
The Bullets (6-2) trailed for just one inning after Coast Guard (5-2) scored a run in the top of the first of the opener. But Gettysburg went ahead for good when it scored a pair of runs on an error in the second.
Junior
Andy Kelley (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) doubled and scored in the fourth to make it 3-1 before classmate
Henry Klimowicz (Allenhurst, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) singled in a run in the fifth to give his team a 4-2 advantage.
The Bears pulled to within a run for the second time when cleanup hitter Tim Duncan led off the sixth with a home run. However, Hungerford (1-1) retired the final six batters, fanning three of the last four he faced. He is now tied with Marc Favieri '90 for third in school history in wins.
Zanghellini and junior
Steve Wright (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) each finished 2-for-3 in the opener.
The Bullets gave Power a cushion early in Game Two, putting up a three-spot in the second. Klimowicz led off with a single before scoring one batter later when junior
Shawn Moffitt's (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) single got away from the rightfielder for a two-base error. Freshman
Logan Sneed (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academy) drove in Moffitt with a fielder's choice before senior
Cory Karagjozi (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) capped the inning with an RBI-single, making it 3-0.
Gettysburg broke it open with a four-run fifth, which pushed its lead to 7-0. The Bullets scored all four runs with two outs on a two-run single from Zanghellini and a two-RBI double from junior
Ben Langey (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia).
Power shut out the Bears over the first five innings, stretching his consecutive scoreless inning streak to start the season to 12. Coast Guard finally broke through in the sixth, when Kyle Wood singled leading off before Duncan slugged his second home run of the game. The Bears followed up with a double and a walk, but Power escaped with a pair of groundouts – one that scored Coast Guard's final run – and a strikeout.
The Bullets pushed across an unearned run in the top of the seventh before freshman
Andrew Jacobson (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) secured the win with a scoreless inning in his collegiate debut.
Zanghellini and Langey each finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs in the nightcap. Power (2-0) scattered eight hits and walked just one.
Gettysburg concludes its Spring Break trip on Saturday, when it plays Thiel College at 10 a.m. and Wisconsin Lutheran College at 1 p.m.
