Box Score 2 WINCHESTER, Va. – Senior
Melissa Tighe (Little Falls, N.J./Mt. St. Dominic) became Gettysburg's all-time leader in steals as the Bullets picked up a split at Shenandoah University in a non-conference softball doubleheader on Thursday.
Gettysburg (10-2) fell in the opener as Shenandoah (3-7) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth and survived a bases-loaded situation in the seventh to escape with a 7-6 victory. The Bullets recovered in the nightcap with Tighe stealing three bases and scoring three runs in a 10-0 victory.
Tighe's three steals in the nightcap gave her 13 on the season and 63 for her career. She broke the previous record set by
Mandy Wilson '02 who swiped 61.
Tighe finished 3-for-7 with four runs and an RBI, while junior
Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon) went 6-for-7 with six RBI in the doubleheader.
Shenandoah struck out to an early 3-0 lead before Gettysburg picked up a pair of runs on a single by Zengel in the third inning. The Bullets tied the game 4-4 in the top of the fourth on a triple by Tighe.
The visitors grabbed a 6-5 advantage in the top of the fifth. Zengel led off with a double and came around to score on a single by senior
Emily Hall (Reston, Va./Flint Hill School). Hall scored later in the frame on a fielder's choice.
The Hornets were down to their last out in the sixth when a two-run double by Lindsay Corbin plated the game-tying and go-ahead runs. Gettysburg was poised to steal the win with runners on second and third with one out, but a pop-out to second set the stage for the hosts to close out the win. After a walk to load the bases, Lisa Mitro induced a fly-out to center to end the game.
Zengel went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while freshman
Wendy Folfas (Westminster, Md./McDonogh School) went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
Corbin went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a pair of runs for Shenandoah. Mitro tossed the final three innings, allowing just two hits and no runs.
In game two, Gettysburg took advantage of a pair of fielding miscues to plate two runs in its opening at bat. That was more than enough for freshman hurler
Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) who improve to 5-0 after surrendering just four hits and striking out five in five innings of work.
The Bullets put an early end to the contest with eight runs in the final two innings. Tighe broke the program's stolen base record with a steal of second in the fourth inning. She also swiped home on a double-steal attempt later in the frame. Zengel posted an RBI single in the fourth and cleared the bases with a double in the fifth.
Gettysburg's top three hitters - Tighe, sophomore
Jamie Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton), and Zengel – combined to go 7-for-10 with six runs and six RBI in the nightcap. Tighe was 2-for-4 with three runs and Abell was 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBI. Zengel was perfect in three plate appearances and drove in four.
Gettysburg is scheduled to begin its Centennial Conference schedule on Saturday, March 21, against Muhlenberg College. With Bobby Jones Field still recovering from the winter, the game has been relocated to Frederick Community College and will start at 1 p.m.
