Box Score MONT ALTO, Pa. – Senior
Eric Hungerford (New Preston, Conn./Shepaug Valley) and sophomore
Rich Power (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) combined on a five-hit shutout, lifting the Gettysburg College baseball team to a 5-0 non-conference victory at Penn State-Mont Alto on Monday.
Â
Hungerford (2-1) tossed the first five innings to pick up the win and move into a tie with Ryan Taylor '13 for second on Gettysburg's career wins list. Hungerford allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out three and is now 21-6 for his career.
Â
Power worked the final four frames to earn his second career save. He yielded just one hit and one walk while fanning six.
Â
Freshman centerfielder
Chuck Probst (North Bend, Pa./Bucktail), making his first career start, finished 3-for-4 with three  RBIs to lead the Bullets (8-4) at the plate. Senior
Scott Zanghellini (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) added a pair of hits while classmate
Cory Karagjozi (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) collected two RBIs.
Â
It was a pitcher's duel in the early going between Hungerford and Mont Alto's Derek Coy. The Bullets received a break in the bottom of the second, when they escaped a bases-loaded jam. The bags were full following three singles when No. 9 hitter Holden Baker rolled a slow grounder to second. Zanghellini charged for the ball but collided with the runner headed for second, who was called out for interference to end the inning.
Â
Hungerford allowed just one baserunner over the next three innings, when a batter reached on an error with two outs in the fourth. But he went on to retire his last four batters.
Â
Power did not allow a runner to advance beyond second. He picked off a runner in the seventh and retired his final four batters as well.
Â
Coy blanked the Bullets on one hit through the first four innings. But in the top of the fifth, the Orange and Blue found a spark when senior
Mike Kielbasa (Ludlow, Mass./Loomis Chaffee) and Karagjozi drew back-to-back one-out walks. Probst followed up with an RBI single to give his team all the offense it would need.
Â
Gettysburg tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the fifth when Karagjozi drilled a two-run single that followed an error two batters earlier.
Â
The Bullets added two insurance runs in the eighth against reliever Colby Dice. Sophomore
Will Anderson (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) led off with a double before junior
Steve Wright (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) was hit with a pitch. Kielbasa bunted the runners over before Karagjozi walked to load the bases. Probst followed up with a two-run single to set the final score.
Â
Gettysburg continues its six-day, seven-game stretch on Tuesday, when it takes on Stevenson University in the Bullets' home opener. The non-conference tilt is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
