Bullets Erase Four-Run Deficit, Win Fifth Straight

Karagjozi Homers; Lawrence Ties Saves Record

Cory Karagjozi drilled his first career home run with a solo shot versus Mount Aloysius.
Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg rallied from a 4-0 first-inning deficit to beat Mount Aloysius College 8-5 in a non-conference baseball tilt Thursday afternoon at a windy and warm Kirchhoff Field.

The Bullets (11-4) swept their three-game homestand and have now won five in a row, including four wins over the last four days.

Sophomore Connor Tom (Reinholds, Pa./Conrad Weiser) turned in another big performance at the plate for Gettysburg, finishing 3-for-5 with three RBIs one day after going 3-for-4 with a double and a home run in a win over Penn State-York. Senior Cory Karagjozi (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) went 2-for-3 and belted his first career home run, a solo shot in the sixth that tied the game at 5-5.

Senior Mike Kielbasa (Ludlow, Mass./Loomis Chaffee) and junior Henry Klimowicz (Allenhurst, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) each picked up two hits for the Bullets while sophomore Will Anderson (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) doubled in the go-ahead run in the seventh.

Sophomore Aaron Bezio (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) started on the mound for the Bullets and came away with a no-decision after throwing the first six innings. Freshman Andrew Jacobson (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) tossed a pair of scoreless innings to pick up his first career win before junior Luke Lawrence (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) worked a three-up, three-down ninth for his sixth career save, which ties the school record held by Brian Koch '06.

The Mounties (9-7) scratched out back-to-back infield singles to open the game, then pushed across a run with a one-out single. No. 7 hitter Cory Dick provided the big blow, dropping in a two-out, three-run single just beyond the grasp of diving rightfielder Andy Kelley (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) to give the Mount its four-run cushion.

Gettysburg answered with two in the bottom of the inning, when Tom and Kielbasa led off with a single and a double before scoring on a groundout and wild pitch.

Bezio settled in to blank Mount Aloysius over the next four innings, when he yielded just two hits and induced a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play in the third. The Bullets continued to rally with a two-run fourth when, with the bases loaded, Tom drilled a two-run single through the left side off Mountie starter Greg Wierzbicki.

The visitors went back in front (5-4) with one run on two hits and a walk in the sixth. But the Bullets answered again, as Karagjozi's blast to left-center knotted the score for the second time.

Gettysburg went ahead for good in the seventh against reliever Rodney Patterson. Kielbasa sparked the inning with a one-out bunt-single, and with two outs, Anderson went after the first pitch and launched it into the leftfield corner. Kielbasa scored all the way from first, and one batter later Klimowicz chased home Anderson with a single into center, making it 7-5.

The Bullets added another insurance run in the eighth, when Tom singled down the rightfield line with two outs.

Jacobson allowed just a two-out single in each of his two innings while picking up two strikeouts before Lawrence closed the door, striking out one while earning his second save of the year.

Bezio struck out six and walked two, scattering eight hits.

Wierzbicki also fanned six over six innings while earning a no-decision. Patterson (2-1) was charged with the loss.

Ben Legath led the Mounties at the plate, finishing 3-for-4.

Gettysburg plays its fifth game in five days on Friday, when it visits Penn State-Berks in a single nine-inning game starting at 4 p.m.
