Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla. – Senior
Eric Hungerford (New Preston, Conn./Shepaug Valley) and sophomore
Rich Power (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) each turned in a solid pitching performance as the Gettysburg College baseball team split its season-opening doubleheader versus Baruch College on the first day of the Bullets' spring break trip.
Â
Hungerford allowed just two hits and an unearned run over six innings of the opener, a 1-0 Baruch victory. Power fired his first collegiate shutout in the nightcap, twirling a three-hitter while striking out 10 as the Bullets defeated the Bearcats 4-0.
Â
Junior
Henry Klimowicz (Allenhurst, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) went 4-for-6 over the twinbill while sophomore
Connor Tom (Reinholds, Pa./Conrad Weiser) and senior
Cory Karagjozi (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) roped three hits apiece.
Â
Hungerford allowed just three baserunners and one hit over the first five innings before Baruch (4-5) broke through in the sixth. Leadoff hitter Matthew Ballone reached on an error leading off the inning, was sacrificed to second, and scored without a throw on a single to left-center. Hungerford would hit a batter with a pitch, but escaped with runners on first and second.
Â
The Bullets had several scoring chances throughout the game but left eight runners on base. Gettysburg left the bases loaded in the first, and also stranded two in the fourth. The Bullets threatened again in the top of the seventh, when Klimowicz led off with a single.
Â
Junior
Andy Kelley (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) then bunted pinch-runner
James Marcello (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) to second before classmate
Shawn Moffitt (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) followed up with a single to put runners on the corners. Senior
Mike Kielbasa (Ludlow, Mass./Loomis Chaffee School) then grounded into a 1-2 fielder's choice before a wild pitch put runners on second and third with two outs. However, starting pitcher Paul Perez induced a 3-1 putout to end the game.
Â
Tom and Klimowicz each finished 2-for-3 in the opener. Hungerford struck out three and walked two while losing his first decision since April 2, 2013.
Â
In the second game, Power was sharp from the beginning, piling up eight of his strikeouts over the first four innings, including fanning the side in the fourth. He allowed just one runner to reach second the entire game and coaxed a 6-4-3 double play to end the sixth.
Â
Gettysburg scored its first run of the season in the bottom of the third, when junior
Ben Langey (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) led off with a walk, was sacrificed to second by Kielbasa, and scored on a single by Karagjozi. The Bullets added a pair of runs in the fourth, when Karagjozi belted a two-run double to make it 3-0, and junior
Steve Wright (Holland, Pa./Central Bucks South) set the final score with an RBI-single in the fifth.
Â
Karagjozi finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the nightcap while Klimowicz went 2-for-3.
Â
The Bullets continue their seven-game, 10-day trip when they take on Rockford University on Monday in a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m.
