Box Score 2 MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Freshman
Stephanie Leonardo (East Haddam, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) blasted a pair of home runs as the Gettysburg College softball team poured in 19 runs in victories over Principia College and Penn State Altoona on Monday.
Gettysburg (3-1) opened the day with a 10-0 win over Principia. The Bullets scored three runs in the opening inning on the strength of RBI doubles by sophomore
Jamie Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) and senior
Ashley Iannone (Great Meadows, N.J./Blair Academy). Two more unearned runs came across in the second to spot Gettysburg a 5-0 advantage.
The Bullets posted two runs with two outs in the top of the fourth as Iannone posted a run-scoring single. The squad capped the game with three runs in the sixth, including a two-run single by freshman
Wendy Folfas (Westminster, Md./McDonogh School).
Iannone finished 4-for-4 with three RBI, while Folfas went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI. Senior
Melissa Tighe (Little Falls, N.J./Mt. St. Dominic Academy) swiped two bases and scored a pair of runs.
Senior
Lindsey Treanor (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) cruised to her first win of the season. Treanor allowed just three hits and struck out eight over six innings.
Gettysburg needed just five innings to dispatch Penn State Altoona. The Nittany Lions scored in the first inning and the Bullets quickly answered with a sacrifice fly by senior
Emily Hall (Reston, Va./Flint Hill School) in the home half.
After scoring the first run, Tighe put her feet to use again to plate the go-ahead run in the third inning. The senior swiped a pair of bags in the inning and scored on a double-steal with Abell to make it 2-1.
The floodgates opened in the final two frames. Leonardo provided the fireworks with a two-run shot to left field for her first career long ball in the fourth inning. After a two-run triple by junior
Meghan Hisgen (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) made it 7-1, Leonardo ended the game with another two-run bomb.
Tighe finished with a hit, two walks, three runs, and three steals in the game. With five steals on the day, the senior outfielder is now 8-for-8 on the year and is just three steals shy of the program's career record of 61 held by Mandy Wilson '02.
Abell, Hisgen, and Leonardo all tallied two hits, with the latter adding two runs scored and four RBI.
Freshman
Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) turned in another strong outing to improve to 2-0. She allowed one run on four hits while striking out three.
Action resumes on Tuesday with the Bullets taking on Cazenovia College and Saint Elizabeth College at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m., respectively.
