Box Score 2 GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College baseball team claimed a walk-off victory in the nightcap and split a Centennial Conference (CC) doubleheader with conference-leading Washington College Saturday afternoon at a sunny, windy Kirchhoff Field.
Â
The Shoremen (16-6, 7-2 CC) used a six-run ninth inning to rally for a 10-6 win in the opener before the Bullets (13-9, 3-4 CC) captured a 5-4, 10-inning victory in a back-and-forth second game.
Â
Junior
Shawn Moffitt (Dowingtown, Pa./Downingtown East), who finished the day 5-for-8 with three stolen bases, stroked a two-out single in the 10th before sophomore
John Convery (Media, Pa./Penncrest), who had entered the game as a defensive replacement, laid down a beautiful bunt in front of the mound for a single. Relief pitcher Logan Dubbe tried to throw out Convery at first, but his throw was wild and rolled deep down the rightfield line, allowing Moffitt to score all the way from first without a throw.
Â
It was Gettysburg's fourth extra-inning affair already this season, as the Bullets improved to 2-2 when playing bonus baseball while capturing their first walk-off victory since their 4-3 win over Johns Hopkins University on April 17 of last season.
Â
In the opener, Gettysburg jumped to a 5-1 lead after three innings versus Shoreman starter Billy Griffin. But Washington began to chip away against Gettysburg starter
Rich Power (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan), scoring an unearned run in the fourth before plating two more in the fifth to make it a 5-4 game. Moffitt provided a highlight in the fourth when, with the bases loaded and one out, he caught a fly ball and one-hopped a perfect throw to the plate, throwing out a runner attempting to tag up and ending the inning.
Â
In the meantime, Griffin settled in and blanked Gettysburg over his last three innings, retiring the nine Bullets he faced. Reliever Nick Popolizio came on to work two additional shutout innings.
Â
Junior
Luke Lawrence (West Chester, Pa./West Chester) was called on in relief with no outs in the fifth and would throw four scoreless innings before the Shoremen erupted for their big six-run ninth on seven hits and two errors versus Lawrence and sophomore
Jonathan Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's).
Â
Gettysburg plated their final run in the bottom of the ninth off Popolizio (1-1), who picked up the win. Lawrence (1-2) was charged with the loss.
Â
Sophomore
Connor Tom (Reinholds, Pa./Conrad Weiser) finished 3-for-4 with two runs while Moffitt went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and all three of his steals. Junior
Henry Klimowicz (Allenhurst, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs.
Â
The nightcap was a pitcher's duel most of the way between Washington's P.J. Mikulus and Gettysburg freshman
Brad DeMartino (Westfield, N.J./Westfield). The Shoremen struck first again when Dubbe launched a solo homer to right in the top of the first, but DeMartino would find his groove, blanking Washington over the next six innings. He allowed just two baseunners on a pair of singles over the stretch.
Â
The Bullets were shut out over the first four innings before breaking through with three in the fifth. Junior
Steve Wright (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) tied it with an RBI-single before senior
Scott Zanghellini (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) pushed across another run with a groundout. A third run would score on an error as the Bullets took a 3-1 lead.
Â
That's how the score would remain until the eighth, when Washington scored twice on three hits and a walk against DeMartino and reliever
Chase Stopyra (Ocean, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy).
Â
Gettysburg went back in front in the bottom half against reliever Joe DiPaola, when sophomore
Will Anderson (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) smacked a one-out single, moved to third when Moffitt reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, and scored on a wild pitch from Dubbe.
Â
The Bullets were one out from victory in the ninth, but the Shoremen refused to go quietly. Charlie Meder singled, Brian Alexa walked, and Dubbe smashed a single that bounced over the head of first baseman
Cory Karagjozi (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) and into righfield to score Meder and make it a 4-4 game. Stopyra prevented further damage, however, when he got a flyout to strand runners on the corners.
Â
Stopyra would go on to work a three-up, three-down 10th before senior
Mike Kielbasa (Ludlow, Mass./Loomis Chaffee School) led off the bottom of the inning with a single. After a slash-bunt attempt resulted in a 1-6-3 double play, Moffitt stepped to the plate and singled into center, setting up the improbable finish.
Â
Wright, Karagjozi, Kielbasa, Anderson, and Moffitt all collected two hits apiece in the nightcap. Stopyra (2-1) earned the win, throwing 2 1/3 innings, while Dubbe (0-1) absorbed the loss. DeMartino struck out seven over 7 2/3 innings while scattering six hits.
Â
The Bullets conclude a four-game homestand on Sunday, when they host Ursinus College in a Centennial Conference doubleheader at 12:30 p.m. The twinbill was originally scheduled as the teams' conference opener back on March 28 but was rained out.
