Box Score 2 GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg's winning streak came to an end in game one against Washington College, but the Bullets bounced back for a 5-3 victory in the nightcap to earn a split in Centennial Conference softball action at Bobby Jones Field Saturday.
Gettysburg (22-4, 7-1 CC) saw its 10-game winning streak come to an end with an 11-1 loss to Washington (9-13, 4-6 CC) in the opener. The Shorewomen jumped in front in the first inning as Kristin Cooper plated two runs with a single.
Cooper made the lead stick by holding the Bullets without a hit until the sixth inning. Trailing 5-0, the hosts got into the scoring column as
Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon) smashed an RBI single down the left-field line.
Washington opened the floodgates with six runs in the top of the seventh. Gettysburg posted a pair of hits in the home half of the inning before Cooper shut the door with her ninth strikeout of the game.
The hosts took the early lead in the nightcap with two runs in the first inning. Zengel and senior
Emily Hall (Reston, Va./Flint Hill School) each poked two-run doubles to right-center to put the Bullets on the board.
The chess match began in earnest the following inning as the Shorewomen brought across two runs to tie the game. Gettysburg answered with a run in the bottom of the frame off an infield error.
After Washington once again pulled even with a run in the third, the Bullets finally jumped in front for good. With two outs on the board, freshman
Stephanie Leonardo (East Haddam, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) singled down the right-field line. She came all the way around to score on a double by classmate
Wendy Folfas (Westminster, Md./McDonogh School). Folfas scored on an error later in the inning to make it 5-3.
Freshman
Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) shut down Washington for the remainder of the game, allowing only two hits over the final four innings. She improved to 11-1 this season after allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits with four strikeouts.
Leonardo went 3-for-3 in the nightcap, while sophomore
Jamie Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) posted a pair of base knocks. Folfas also scored a pair of runs.
Gettysburg heads right back to the home field with a doubleheader against Muhlenberg College beginning at 2 p.m.
