Box Score

BALTIMORE – The Gettysburg College baseball team jumped to an early 2-0 lead, but Johns Hopkins University rallied to win 3-2 on a walk-off single in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action Wednesday afternoon.

It was a 2-2 game heading into the bottom of the ninth, and sophomore reliever Rich Power (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) got the first two outs before the Blue Jays loaded the bases on a hit batsman followed by a single and a walk. No. 3 hitter Colin McCarthy then singled up the middle to score the winning run.

Junior Steve Wright (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) and senior Scott Zanghellini (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) each went 2-for-4 at the plate for Gettysburg (17-10, 6-5 CC), which saw its four-game winning streak come to an end. One of Zanghellini's hits went for a double.

Conor Reynolds and McCarthy each collected three hits for Hopkins (15-8-1, 7-3-1 CC).

The Bullets pushed across two runs in the top of the first to assume their early advantage. Sophomore Connor Tom (Reinholds, Pa./Conrad Weiser) singled leading off the game and scored after back-to-back Blue Jay errors, and senior Mike Kielbasa (Ludlow, Mass./Loomis Chaffee) would add an RBI-double. However, Hopkins starter Justin Drechsel and reliever Ross Lazicky would combine to blank the Bullets the rest of the way.

Sophomore Brad DeMartino (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) started on three-days rest for the Bullets and tossed five shutout innings to open the game. But the Blue Jays pulled even in the sixth, when Reynolds walked and McCarthy singled. A single by Craig Hoelzer and an outfield error would clear the bases and allow Hoelzer to reach third. But that's when Power (2-2) took the mound to record the final two outs of the inning before blanking Hopkins in the seventh and eighth.

The Bullets put up a threat in the top of the eighth and the ninth. With one out in the eighth, Wright singled and junior Shawn Moffitt (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) walked to chase Drechsel from the game, but Lazicky (2-0) came on to get the final two outs. In the ninth, Gettysburg put runners on first and second, as junior Henry Klimowicz (Allenhurst, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) led off with a single before classmate Andy Kelley (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) drew a two-out walk. But Lazicky escaped with a groundout.

Gettysburg closes out its season series with Hopkins on Friday, when it hosts the Blue Jays at 3:30 p.m. at Kirchhoff Field.
