Box Score 2 GETTYSBURG, Pa. – McDaniel College scored the game-winning run in the top of the 10th inning to complete a sweep of Gettysburg College in a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader at Bobby Jones Field on Saturday.
McDaniel (21-7, 11-1 CC) tallied six runs in the final two innings to earn a 6-1 over Gettysburg (25-7, 10-4 CC) in the opening game. It was a good old-fashioned pitcher's duel in the nightcap as Bullet hurler
Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and Green Terror pitcher Caroline Brehm combined for 24 strikeouts over 10 innings. The visitors came up with the win, taking advantage of the international tiebreaker rule to plate the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning for a 2-1 decision.
McDaniel had its sights set on scoring early in the opener, loading the bases with no outs. After a force out at home, senior
Lindsey Treanor (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning.
The Green Terror brought across four runs in the top of the sixth inning, including two on a single by Ally Galati. The Bullets answered with a run in the home half of the inning. Sophomore
Sam Misurell (Franklin Park, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) led off with a single and came around to score on a throwing error by the center fielder following a double by classmate
Jamie Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton).
Taylor Hishon cracked a two-run double in the seventh to set the final score.
Brehm allowed five hits and struck out eight. Treanor took the loss to fall to 11-5 on the year. The Bullet hurler allowed six runs (five earned) on four hits and struck out three.
Abell went 2-for-3 for Gettysburg in the opener.
Game two was a war of attrition as neither lineup could manage much action against the opposing pitchers. Despite a single by Abell and a double by junior
Steph Zengel (Hugh Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon) in the first inning, Gettysburg came up empty with a pair of putouts at first base.
McDaniel brought across its first run in the second inning thanks to a lead-off double by Hishon. Following a pair of outs, Hishon came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 1-0.
The two teams combined for just two hits over the next three-and-a-half innings. Reilly put a threat to rest in the top of the sixth by fanning Jamie Weisser with two runners aboard. In the bottom of the inning, Gettysburg tied the game with Zengel smashing a double to left to plate Abell, who beat out an infield single to first base in the preceding at bat.
The Green Terror had designs on scoring first in extra innings, but Reilly slammed the door in the eighth inning. With runners on first and second and one out, the Bullet freshman struck out the next two batters.
In the 10th inning, the international tiebreaker rule was put into effect and a runner was placed on second base. After a sacrifice advanced the runner to third, Stracie Maring brought home the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to left field. The Bullets were poised to answer with a fielder's choice and stolen base placing runners on second and third with no outs. But Brehm had other ideas, striking out the last three batters to close the game.
Brehm tossed another complete game, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out 13. Maring, Lindsey Miller, and Hishon all posted two hits for McDaniel.
Reilly struck out a season-high 11 and allowed just one earned run on eight hits. She fell to 13-2 with the loss. Abell picked up two more hits, while Zengel finished 2-for-3 with a walk and RBI. Zengel now has 13 doubles on the season, two shy of the program's single-season record.
Gettysburg travels to Randolph-Macon College for a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday, April 19, at 1:30 p.m.
