Box Score 2 ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon College scored all five of its runs in its final at bat to claim a 5-2 victory in the nightcap and complete a sweep of Gettysburg College in non-conference softball action on Sunday.
Gettysburg (25-9) managed just four hits against Randolph-Macon (20-10) in a 7-1 loss in the opening game. The Bullets led 2-0 heading into the sixth inning before the Yellow Jackets tallied five runs in the bottom of the sixth to cap the sweep.
Junior
Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon) went 4-for-7 with a run in the doubleheader, while freshman
Mykaela Twitchell (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) tallied three hits, a walk, and two runs scored.
The Bullets managed just one hit through the first three innings of the first game. Randolph-Macon jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and tacked on another run in the third to make it 4-0.
Gettysburg cracked the scoring column in the fourth as Twitchell blasted a double to left-center and came around to score on a single by junior
Meghan Hisgen (East Northport, N.Y./Commack).
The Bullets managed just one more hit against Nelda Bagley, who finished with eight strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
The Yellow Jackets pushed across three more runs in the sixth to put the game away.
In the nightcap, the hosts were poised to jump on the board in the second inning after loading the bases with one out. Freshman
Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) worked out of the jam with a force-out at home followed by an interference call on the next hitter.
Gettysburg grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the fourth. After back-to-back singles by Zengel and Twitchell and a sacrifice bunt, senior
Emily Hall (Reston, Va./Flint Hill School) drew a walk to load the bases. Freshman
Stephanie Leonardo (East Haddam, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) cashed in with a single to plate one run. The visitors tried to add more, but Twitchell was thrown out at home trying to score on a fly to left field.
Leonardo added to the Bullets' lead with another run-scoring single to plate Twitchell in the sixth inning. Despite loading the bases with no outs, Gettysburg was denied once again as Bagley forced a pair of fly outs before fanning the final batter.
The Yellow Jackets stormed ahead with five runs in the sixth inning. The hosts sent 11 batters to the plate, picking up four hits, two walks, and two hit-by-pitches.
Zengel went 3-for-4 in the finale, while Twitchell and Leonardo each went 2-for-3. Senior
Melissa Tighe (Little Falls, N.J./Mount St. Dominic Academy) went 2-for-4 with a stolen base.
Gettysburg travels to Susquehanna University on Thursday, April 23, for a pair of games beginning at 3 p.m.
