Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall College rallied from a 4-0 deficit, scoring nine runs after the third inning to hand the Bullets a 9-6 setback in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action Thursday afternoon at Kirchhoff Field.
Â
Sophomore
Will Anderson (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) gave the Bullets (12-5, 1-1 CC) an early four-run lead when he belted his first career grand slam in the bottom of the second off Diplomat starter Mack Glavin. However, Glavin would settle in to blank Gettysburg over the next four innings while F&M scored nine unanswered runs from the fourth through the seventh.
Â
Anderson also roped a triple and finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Sophomore
Connor Tom (Reinholds, Pa./Conrad Weiser) went 2-for-5 with a double for Gettysburg, which committed three errors that led to five unearned runs. Sophomore
Rich Power (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) started on the mound for the Bullets and was charged with the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) through five-plus innings.
Â
Luke Seib led Franklin & Marshall at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Glavin (3-1) worked 7 1/3 innings and scattered six runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six to earn the win.
Â
Glavin ran into control issues in the second, hitting junior
Henry Klimowicz (Allenhurst, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) before walking seniors
Cory Karagjozi (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) and
Mike Kielbasa (Ludlow, Mass./Loomis Chaffee School) to load the bases with no outs. Anderson then crushed a 2-0 pitch over the left-center fence for his second homer of the season. But that's when Glavin retired 15 of the next 17 batters, allowing the Diplomats to make their comeback.
Â
Power (2-1) retired the first seven batters he faced before working out of a jam in the third, leaving runners on the corners. But F&M finally broke through with a two-run, four-hit third to make it 4-2. Power left a pair of runners on again in the fifth before the Diplomats took the lead for good with a three-run, three-hit sixth that included one error.
Â
Sophomore
Jonathan Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's) was summoned out of the bullpen in the sixth with the bases loaded and no outs and the Bullets leading 4-2. He proceeded to induce four straight ground balls; however, F&M was able to scratch out three runs. Lucido went home on a comebacker to the mound to get the first out before Brett Poniros just beat out an infield single that made it 4-3. The next batter also grounded a ball in the infield but the throw home took Anderson off the plate as the Diplomats drew even. The go-ahead run went on to score when David Iacobucci grounded out to short.
Â
F&M added four more runs in the seventh against Lucido and freshman
Andrew Jacobson (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) on three hits and an error to push its advantage to 9-4.
Â
The Bullets finally got to Glavin in the eighth, scoring a pair of runs on four singles and a groundout. Tom and senior
Scott Zanghellini (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) singled to chase Glavin from the game, and Klimowicz reached on an infield single to load the bases. Karagjozi would bloop a single down the rightfield line against reliever Chris Mathewson before Kielbasa drove in the game's final run with a groundout. But Mathewson left runners at second and third by getting another groundout to end the inning.
Â
Gettysburg had the tying run at the plate in the ninth when Tom doubled off closer Andrew Mascis with two outs and junior
Steve Wright (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) followed up with a single. But Mascis ended the game with a groundout to earn the save.
Â
Sophomore
Aaron Bezio (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) came on to throw two perfect innings of relief for the Bullets, striking out three.
Â
Gettysburg returns to Centennial Conference action on Saturday when it visits Swarthmore College in a doubleheader starting at 12:30 p.m.
