Box Score WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Gettysburg College baseball team was edged 5-4 in 10 innings at McDaniel College in a back-and-forth Centennial Conference (CC) tilt Friday afternoon at Preston Field.
Â
With the loss, Gettysburg (20-12, 9-7 CC) is now in a three-way tie with McDaniel and Washington College for third place in the Centennial heading into the final day of the conference schedule. The top-four teams qualify for the conference playoffs.
Â
The game saw the lead change hands three times and was tied once over the final four innings.
Â
Sophomore
John Convery (Media, Pa./Penncrest) led the Bullets at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with an inside-the-park home run, while Marty Windisch went 3-for-5 for McDaniel (16-12, 9-7 CC).
Â
It was a scoreless game over the first four innings, but the Bullets got on the scoreboard in the fifth against starter Zach Kronick, when sophomore
Will Anderson (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) led off with a double and scored on a two-out single from senior
Cory Karagjozi (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville).
Â
Senior
Eric Hungerford (New Preston, Conn./Shepaug Valley) blanked the Green Terror over the first six innings before the hosts took the lead with a two-run seventh. McDaniel tacked on another run in the eighth to assume a 3-1 advantage, but Gettysburg seized back the lead with a three-run ninth.
Â
Convery led off with his inside-the-parker, which resulted after the rightfielder ran into the wall tracking down a deep drive. The Bullets went on to load the bases with one out versus reliever David Pisauro before senior
Mike Kielbasa (Ludlow, Mass./Loomis Chaffee) delivered a two-run single into left, putting his team on top 4-3.
Â
Errors would cost the Bullets in the final two innings, as both of McDaniel's final two runs were unearned. In the ninth, Hungerford struck out the first batter but the Terror pulled even following an error and a pair of singles. Then in the 10th, Sean Sivo drew a leadoff walk versus sophomore reliever
Aaron Bezio (Stafford, Va./Mountain View). After a strikeout, Sivo stole second and the Bullets issued an intentional walk. McDaniel then caught a break when Sivo was stuck between the bases after leaving too early on another steal attempt, but the pitcher's throw to third was wild, bringing home the winning run.
Â
Hungerford worked nine innings and came away with a no-decision, allowing four runs (three earned) on 12 hits and no walks while striking out four. Bezio (2-2) was charged with the loss.
Â
Kronick threw 7 1/3 innings to receive a no-decision for the Green Terror while Pisauro (3-3) hurled the rest of the way to earn the win.
Â
Gettysburg will conclude its hunt for a Centennial Conference playoff berth on Saturday, when it hosts Haverford College in a doubleheader starting at 12:30 p.m. on Senior Day and Take ALS Yard Day.
