Box Score 2 GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College baseball team saw its bid for a third-straight Centennial Conference playoff berth come up just short, as the Bullets lost both ends of a Centennial Conference (CC) doubleheader to Haverford College on Senior Day and Project ALS Day Saturday at Kirchhoff Field.
Â
On the final day of the Centennial Conference schedule, the Fords (13-18, 9-9 CC) won the opener 18-3, then rallied for three runs in the ninth to capture the nightcap 6-4. Haverford and Gettysburg (20-14, 9-9 CC) finished in a three-way tie for the fourth and final conference playoff spot, but Haverford won the tiebreaker on head-to-head competition between the three teams.
Â
The Bullets' four seniors were honored in a brief ceremony before the game, and between games a "Project ALS Day" ceremony was held as the baseball team's "Take ALS Yard" efforts were recognized.
Â
In an exciting second game that saw the lead change hands three times in the last three innings, sophomore
Eric Brown (Marriottsville, Md./Marriottsville) started and limited the Fords to one run on six hits through six innings. Facing Tommy Bergjans, the two-time Centennial Conference Pitcher of the Year who was throwing on three-days rest, the Bullets pushed across two runs in the fourth. Junior
Steve Wright (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) led off with an infield single and scored on an error before junior
Henry Klimowicz (Allenhurst, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) drove home a second run with a single.
Â
Brown, meanwhile, blanked Haverford through the first five innings, retiring eight of nine at one point, before the Fords got on the scoreboard in the sixth. Sophomore
Aaron Bezio (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) came on in relief in the seventh, but after the Fords reached base on four straight at-bats to tie the game, classmate
Jonathan Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's) was summoned out of the bullpen with a 2-0 count. He induced a fielder's choice that put Haverford in front 3-2, but he went on to retire the final two batters of the inning.
Â
The Bullets answered with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the frame to go back on top 4-3. Senior
Mike Kielbasa (Ludlow, Mass./Loomis Chaffee) got things started with ringing double to left, and went on to score when the shortstop threw the ball away at third on a ground ball. Klimowicz, who reached on the fielder's choice, eventually came around to score on another throwing error to put the Bullets in front.
Â
Lucido rolled up a 4-6-3 inning-ending double play to get out of the eighth before Bergjans uncorked a strike-three wild pitch to put the leadoff batter on base in the bottom half. However, he went on to retire the side.
Â
Gettysburg carried a one-run lead into the ninth, but Haverford tied it on a walk and a pair of singles before the Bullets committed two infield throwing errors on the same play, allowing two runs to score and making it 6-4. After yielding a leadoff single in the bottom of the inning, Bergjans fanned the side to end the game.
Â
Kielbasa and Klimowicz each finished 2-for-4 for the Bullets. Lucido (0-1) allowed just two hits and one earned run over three innings but was charged with the loss.
Â
Bergjans (5-2) finished with a seven-hit complete game. Just one of his runs was earned, and he struck out nine.
Â
Haverford took advantage of eight Gettysburg errors in the opener and scored 17 of its runs over the first six innings. Freshman
Brad DeMartino (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) started for the Bullets on the mound and took the loss after throwing three innings. Senior
Scott Zanghellini (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) finished 2-for-3 at the plate for the Bullets while Mike Schmandt was 4-for-5 for Haverford. Justin Herring (2-0) carried a two-hit shutout into the eighth before Gettysburg scored three runs on four hits.
Â
The Bullets close out their season on Monday, when they host Susquehanna University in a non-conference game starting at 4 p.m.
