WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Gettysburg College softball team picked up an 8-4 win over Haverford College on Saturday, defeating the Fords for the second-straight day and advancing to the title game of the Centennial Conference Championship at McDaniel College.

Gettysburg (30-13), which moved one win away from the program record for a single season, was put on the brink of elimination with a 10-1 loss to host McDaniel (28-10) in its opening game. The Bullets bounced back in the second playoff meeting with Haverford (25-10-1), jumping out to the early lead and hanging on for the victory.

Gettysburg now faces McDaniel for the conference title on Sunday at noon, with a potential second game slated for about 3 p.m. if necessary. The Bullets are in the championship game for the first time since winning it all in 2007. The Green Terror seeks its seventh conference title and first since 2012.

Freshman Wendy Folfas (Westminster, Md./McDonogh School) shined in front of her hometown crowd against Haverford, going 3-for-4 with three RBI. Sophomore Jamie Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) and freshman Mykaela Twitchell (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) each added two hits, the latter adding two runs and two RBI.

The Bullets struck first against the Fords with a run in the second inning. Twitchell blasted a lead-off double to center field and scored on a ground out later in the inning. Haverford, which fell to the Bullets 5-3 on Friday, answered in the top of the third with an RBI double by Lauren Touey.

Gettysburg scored in each of its next two at bats to grab a 5-1 advantage. Folfas brought in a run with a single and Twitchell added a two-run base hit in the third inning. Abell drove in another run with a double in the fourth inning.

Haverford cut the lead with some yard work in the fifth inning. After a hit-by-pitch and fielder's choice, Kendall Chambers slugged her first home run of the season to make it 5-4.

The Bullets added three insurance runs in the bottom of the frame. After loading the bases with no outs, pinch-hitter Stephanie Leonardo (East Haddam, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) posted a hit to right to score one run. The Fords nearly escaped without any additional damage with a fielder's choice at home and a strikeout, but Folfas stroked a two-run single to extend the lead to 8-5.

Freshman Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) retired eight of the final nine batters she faced, allowing only a walk in the sixth inning. She improved to 17-3 this season after allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out four.

The Bullets also set or tied a handful of program records. Abell beat out teammate Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon) in the race for the single-season hits record with the sophomore's three base knocks on the day giving her 63 for the season, topping the previous record by two. Zengel finished with two hits and sits one behind Abell in the hits race. One of her hits was her 15th double this spring, tying the school's single-season mark.

Senior Melissa Tighe (Little Falls, N.J./Mount St. Dominic Academy) scored a pair of runs on Saturday to grab the single-season record ahead of Abell, who trails the senior by just one run. Tighe also moved into ties for the career marks for hits (189) and walks (87).

In the first game, McDaniel and Gettysburg were tied 1-1 after the first inning. The Green Terror tallied a lead-off hit with Olivia Kipe driving in the game's first run. The Bullets answered in the bottom of the inning as Tighe scored on a single by Folfas. Gettysburg had the bases loaded with no outs, but McDaniel pitcher Caroline Brehm struck out the next two batters before closing the inning with a pop-up to short.

The Bullets put runners in scoring position with less than two outs in four of the last five innings, but could not convert against Brehm. Brehm improved to 22-6 on the year after allowing one run on five hits with four walks and eight strikeouts.

McDaniel broke the tie with four runs in the third, including two of the unearned variety. The Green Terror added five more runs in the fifth and sixth to put an early end to the contest.
