Laura Bergin (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) smashed a combined 31 kills to lead the Gettysburg College volleyball team to a pair of wins at the North Jersey Challenge at Kean University Friday night.
Gettysburg (4-4) began the day by pounding down a season-high 53 kills in a 3-1 victory (25-17, 21-25, 25-18, 25-16) over the College of New Rochelle (3-2). The Bullets cruised in the opening set and led for most of set two before New Rochelle finished on an 11-4 run for its lone victory. Gettysburg had no issue in the final two frames, trailing only on the opening point of set four.
Bergin was on fire against the Blue Angels, knocking down 22 of her 47 attack attempts without committing an error for a .468 attack percentage. She also added 13 digs. Sophomore
Lauren Godshalk (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) added a career-high tying 12 kills, while classmate
Stephanie Blair (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) turned in six kills, 38 assists, three aces, and 15 digs.
Sophomore
Katherine Gilbert (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) put up a career-high 23 digs to go with five assists and four aces. Senior
Alesha Miller (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) recorded a dozen digs.
The Bullets ended with a clean sweep (25-21, 25-18, 25-17) of Kean. Tied at 20 in the first set, Bergin and Godshalk knocked down back-to-back kills as Gettysburg finished on a 5-1 run. The Cougars jumped out to early leads in the final two contests, but the Bullets finished strong in each frame. A 7-1 run put the visitors up by eight late in set two, while a 9-1 run capped the finale.
Bergin and Godshalk once again led the way, the former hitting nine kills and the latter recording eight kills. Bergin also posted 11 digs. Blair posted a double-double with 24 assists and 16 digs, while Gilbert produced three aces and 14 digs.
Gettysburg continues play at the North Jersey Challenge, but switches venues on Saturday. The Bullets will head to Montclair State University to face the host Red Hawks at 11 a.m. before ending the event against St. Joseph's College of Long Island at 1 p.m.
