Box Score 2 MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Sophomore
Stephanie Blair (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) posted 11 kills, 33 assists, and 17 digs to lead the Bullets' volleyball team past host Montclair State University in five sets in Saturday's opening match of the North Jersey Challenge.
Gettysburg (5-5) bounced back from a 2-0 deficit to beat Montclair State (4-3) in five sets 12-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-19, and 15-10. The Bullets missed out on a perfect weekend with a 3-1 loss (25-18, 18-25, 25-22, 26-24) to St. Joseph's College of Long Island.
Gettysburg had no answer for Montclair's attack in the opening two sets as the Red Hawks pounded down 28 kills. The tide turned in set three as the Bullets jumped out to a big lead and held on for a close win as junior
Laura Bergin (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) sealed the set with a kill.
After winning the fourth set, Gettysburg controlled the early portion of the decisive fifth frame, jumping out to a 7-3 lead. Montclair tied the match at 10 before the visitors closed on a five-point capped by an ace by sophomore
Katherine Gilbert (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep).
Blair's triple-double was the second of her careeer. She posted 11 kills, 41 assists, and 11 digs in a five-set win over Ursinus College last fall.
Bergin posted 19 kills and 15 digs, while sophomore
Lauren Godshalk (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) picked up 10 kills. Senior
Courtney Morrow (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) recorded nine kills and seven total blocks. Gilbert paced the team with 25 digs to go with eight assists and three aces.
Gettysburg's perfect weekend came to a halt against St. Joseph's. The Bullets led the fourth west 24-23 before St. Joseph's rallied for the final three points to close out the decision.
Morrow paced the attack with 10 kills, while Godshalk put down nine kills. Blair posted six kills, 24 assists, and a dozen digs. Gilbert and senior
Hannah Bentz (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) each produced 13 digs, with the former also serving five aces.
Gettysburg travels to Shenandoah University next Wednesday, Sept. 16. The start of the match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
