Box Score 2 GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College volleyball team posted 15 service aces as it defeated Mount St. Mary (N.Y.) College 3-0 to earn a split on the final day of its own Battlefield Classic inside Bream Gym on Saturday.
Gettysburg (2-3) opened the day with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-9) setback against Geneva College (5-0). The Golden Tornadoes whipped up 42 kills against just six errors for a hitting percentage of .305 in the sweep.
Junior
Laura Bergin (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) paced the Bullet offense with nine kills and recorded 17 digs. Senior
Joosje Grevers (Westport, Conn./Staples) managed seven kills. Sophomore
Katherine Gilbert (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) tied a personal best with 18 digs, while sophomore setter
Stephanie Blair (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) logged five kills, 17 assists, and 13 digs.
The Bullets closed the day with a quick sweep of Mount St. Mary. The hosts needed only 16 minutes to win the opening set 25-10, while winning the second and third frames by scores of 25-14 and 25-9, respectively. Gettysburg recorded a sturdy hitting percentage of .370 in the contest.
The 15 aces posted by the Bullets tied the best output since the squad posted 16 aces against Franklin & Marshall College on Oct. 23, 2013.
Sophomore
Meri Lowy (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) posted six service aces in the match, including for the winning point in set one. Gilbert posted five aces and six digs, while senior
Hannah Bentz (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) recorded two aces and 10 digs.
Bergin continued a strong weekend by putting down 14 kills and adding eight digs. For the weekend, the junior outside totaled 60 kills and averaged 4.62 kills per set on the way to being named to the All-Tournament Team. Sophomore
Lauren Godshalk (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) was near-perfect with eight kills on nine attempts. Blair posted five kills and dished out 24 assists.
Gettysburg hosts York (Pa.) College in a non-conference match on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m.
