Kevin Gladstone (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) scored a season-high 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting and the Gettysburg College men's basketball team downed Washington College 65-52 in a Centennial Conference (CC) tilt Tuesday evening in Bream Gym.
The Bullets (10-3, 5-1 CC) never trailed and led by as much as 23 late in the second half.
Gettysburg used another big first half to take command, building a 32-14 lead at the break. In their previous game, the Bullets led Haverford 50-22 at the intermission en route to a 92-47 victory.
With their victory and a Johns Hopkins' win over Swarthmore, the Bullets now find themselves in sole possession of second place in the Centennial Conference standings.
Gladstone scored 15 of his points in the second half, when he was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field, en route to his third career 20-point game.
Sophomore guard
Alex Kaslander (Verona, N.J./Verona) added his second career double-double for the Bullets on 11 points and a career-high 11 rebounds off the bench while sophomore guard
Matt England (Warrington, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) posted 12 points and seven rebounds. Freshman forward
Mateus Maccieri (Reggio Emilia, Italy/John Carroll School [Md.]) pitched in with season-highs of eight points and six rebounds while junior forward
Tanner Kirkpatrick (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) added seven points and five assists.
The Bullets outrebounded Washington 65-52, marking the sixth time this season they have finished with at least 10 more rebounds than their opponent.
Dave Knox registered a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds for Washington (2-9, 0-5 CC).
The Bullets led 7-6 before taking command with a 13-0 run that was sparked by back-to-back 3-pointers from junior forward
Cody Kiefer (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) and Kaslander. England scored the last five points of the run to make it 20-6 with 9:19 remaining in the opening period.
The Shoremen pulled to within 12 on three occasions before Gettysburg ended the half on an 8-2 spurt to assume a 32-14 halftime advantage. Kaslander and Kirkpatrick closed the surge with a pair of 3-pointers, and the Bullets shot 6-for-10 from beyond the arc for the stanza.
Washington opened the second half with a big run to pull to within single digits. The Shoremen used a 12-2 push to get to within 10 (36-26), and the visitors eventually cut the deficit to eight (37-29) with 16:03 remaining. However, that's when Gladstone keyed an 8-0 run as the Bullets doubled their advantage to 16. Gladstone scored the first six points of the run, kicking off a stretch in which he would score 10 of his team's 12 points.
Gettysburg used another 8-0 run later in the period to restore its 20-point lead (55-35) with 7:17 left. The Bullets would still lead by 20 (62-42) with 3:14 left before the Shoremen outscored the Orange and Blue 10-3 to end the night.
The Bullets return to Centennial Conference action on Thursday, when they visit Ursinus College at 8 p.m.
