GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg's comeback bid ran out of gas in the fourth set as Swarthmore College held off the Bullets for a 3-1 victory in Centennial Conference volleyball action inside Bream Gym Tuesday night.
Swarthmore (14-2, 6-1 CC) never trailed in the opening two sets on the way to 25-20 and 25-15 decisions. Gettysburg (12-6, 2-2 CC) bounced back for a 25-18 victory in set three, but the Garnet closed out the win with the final four points to take the fourth contest 25-21.
After trailing throughout the first two frames, Gettysburg came alive in the third set and grabbed its first lead at 8-7 on a kill by junior setter
Stephanie Blair (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham). The Bullets maintained the upper-hand thanks to senior
Laura Bergin (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) who pounded down six kills as part of a 10-4 run to close out the set.
The fourth set featured 11 ties and four lead changes. Gettysburg jumped in front 12-9 on a kill by freshman
Kasey Higgins (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater Raritan) only to see Swarthmore come back to grab a 16-14 lead on a kill by Olivia Leventhal.
Freshman
Francesca Garison (Metuchen, N.J./John F. Kennedy Memorial) knocked down a kill to force a tie at 21, but that would be the final point of the match for the hosts as the Garnet took advantage of three Bullet errors to end the contest.
Bergin paced Gettysburg with 15 kills and she added 11 digs for her third consecutive double-double. Garison tallied a dozen kills, while Blair finished with 34 assists and 10 digs. Junior
Katherine Gilbert (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) paced the team with 14 digs and junior
Maddie Weikert (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) added 11 digs.
Mehra den Braven recorded 14 kills and 16 digs for Swarthmore. Sarah Wallace finished with 10 kills and 16 digs, while Sarah Girard put up 18 digs.
Gettysburg continues a three-match home-stand against Dickinson College on Thursday at 7 p.m.
