GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg College bounced back from a 3-0 loss to Muhlenberg College in Centennial Conference play to sweep a non-conference match up with Hood College Saturday inside Bream Gym.
Muhlenberg (17-9, 6-3 CC) strengthened its hold on a playoff spot by beating Gettysburg (16-7, 5-3 CC) with scores of 25-18, 25-21, and 25-11. The Bullets jumped out with the first four points in the opening set and led 17-7 following a kill by junior
Lauren Godshalk (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan).
A timeout by the Mules helped right the ship for the visitors, who went on an 18-1 run to win the first set. Gettysburg led by as many as six in the second contest before Muhlenberg came back to tie it at 16. The score remained deadlocked at 20 before the Mules closed the decision with a 5-1 run. The visitors capped the day with a 14-1 surge to finish out the third set.
Freshman
Francesca Garison (Metuchen, N.J./John F. Kennedy Memorial) led the Bullets with 11 kills, while senior
Laura Bergin (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) posted six kills and seven digs in two sets. Junior
Stephanie Blair (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) finished with 18 assists and seven digs.
Gettysburg led for most of its match with Hood (9-18), winning with scores of 25-15, 25-19, and 25-21. After being recognized prior to the match, Bergin opened the contest with a kill for the hosts and the Bullets raced out to a 10-point advantage on the way to the win. Hood kept things close in the second set until a kill by Blair kicked off a six-point spurt to give the hosts a 15-8 lead. A kill by Bergin set up a service ace by Blair to claim the second-set victory.
The hosts trailed 9-5 in the third set before mounting a 7-0 run which featured three kills by freshman
Shannon Fletcher (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park). The lead remained in favor of Gettysburg for the rest of the contest with the match ending on an emphatic block by Blair and Fletcher.
Bergin tallied a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs. Garison also picked up 11 kills, while Blair flirted with a triple-double with eight kills, 28 assists, and eight digs. Junior
Katherine Gilbert (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) tallied 16 digs and a pair of aces.
Gettysburg returns to action at Franklin & Marshall College on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m.
