WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior
Laura Bergin (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) totaled 41 kills in a pair of matches and became the 12th player from Gettysburg College to reach 1,000 career kills as the Bullets picked up a pair of wins at the Lycoming College Tournament.
Gettysburg (12-5) cruised to a 3-0 (25-8, 25-16, 25-12) win over Wilkes University (9-13) in Friday's first match. Paired against unbeaten Alfred State (12-1) in the nightcap, Bergin erupted for a career-high tying 26 kills to lift the Bullets past the Pioneers in five sets (25-22, 22-25, 25-18, 19-25, 15-11).
The Bullets ran away from the Colonels in the opening contest. Bergin made quick work in reaching the milestone, hitting the mark with her fourth kill to give Gettysburg a 16-5 advantage in the opening set. She became the first Bullet to reach 1,000 career kills since
Katie Heffner '08 in 2007.
Bergin finished with more kills (15) than Wilkes' entire team (13). Junior
Stephanie Blair (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) tallied six kills, 27 assists, and 11 digs, while junior
Katherine Gilbert (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) posted 15 digs. Freshman
Caroline Sequeira (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) put up 11 digs.
For the sixth time this fall and third time in four matches, Gettysburg went the full five sets when it squared off with Alfred State. The Bullets seized control in the opening set by breaking a 6-6 tie with a five-point run. Set two featured nine ties before the Pioneers finished out the set with five of the final seven points.
Leading by one in the third frame, Gettysburg busted loose a 7-0 run to take a 17-9 lead on the way to victory. The momentum favored the Bullets early in the fourth set, but Alfred State overcame a 15-12 deficit with five-straight points to surge in front. The Pioneers ran off the final three points to set up a decisive fifth set.
Gettysburg opened the final contest with three-straight kills and grabbed a 7-2 lead on an ace by Blair. Alfred State closed the gap to 14-11, but Bergin put down her final kill to close out the victory.
Bergin's kill total tied her personal high set against Messiah College last September and tied the seventh-best total in a match in program history. She also put up a season-high 16 digs.
Blair tied a personal best with 51 assists and put up 19 digs. Freshman
